My zine on 1930 & 1931 animation is on sale now. I'm dealing with small quantities, so this listing will go away when my current stock is sold. But fear not, this isn't a once-only print run. This'll pop in and out of sale as I make copies. Available in USA/CAN only at the moment.

L'AVVENTURA (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1960) I like a bit of everything in cinema, but the films that really make me think and feel are usually a little boring. They let you wander, rather than hold your hand. Feel the time, rather than dispose of it.

He's having a little bit of a renaissance and I'm super here for it.

Super rad. Enjoy!

His description of St. John's as an unusually special city because it is at once very bright, but haunted feeling is pretty accurate. (He was here in the Summer/Fall of last year)

Josh Hartnett really put the work in when preparing for his Newfoundland set Netflix series. His interview with Tom Power on Q is very detailed about process and the training he did to get the part right to respect this province. He seems rad. Everyone I know who worked on the show said as much

zine in the mail made my week!! if you read his (essential) substack you know his deeply researched & beautifully observed writing on animation

his new zine on 1930/1931 american animation captures a medium in its infancy. an enormous task & a treasure to behold ❤️

My 15th Bugs Bunny piece is up. There's some great stuff in this short revolving around Bugs using hypnosis to turn Elmer Fudd into a doppelganger of himself, breaking the fabric of accepted Bugs Bunny cartoon reality. A pretty good early Freleng/Maltese Bugs short.

My series on the HALLOWEEN films continues with HALLOWEEN II. In this essay, I take a look at the community rot of Haddonfield, the growing place of TV news in the series, and what is lost without John Carpenter.

A sample paragraph on my essay can be found here: My essay on HALLOWEEN 3: SEASON OF THE WITCH should be up on Monday or Tuesday. I love that one.

The trouble with the second Halloween film is that it takes place minutes after the conclusion of the first film, and that it had to look and feel like Carpenter’s original. Cinematographer Dean Cundey returned to shoot the film in the hopes that it would feel seamless. The connective tissue in the aesthetic through the familiar set-ups, choices of deep, shadowed lighting, and Michael’s place within, should make the film work exceptionally well in theory, but in practice, something is missing. The images look almost the same when comparing this film to the first one, but Carpenter’s forcefulness, his sense of play, and his ambiguity between the lines give sturdier meaning to every inch of the frame. He doesn’t call attention that meaning either. He assumes we’ll get it by watching and that it doesn’t need to be said out loud. Watching Halloween and Halloween II back to back really stresses the validity of the auteur theory in the case of some directors. Carpenter’s way of looking and presenting a myth is more dynamic because it can feel central. After watching Halloween, one might wonder how we ever got on as a society without it, until one realizes that the story was embedded in life already; think of the comparison that I made in the first piece to everyday experiences of women who know what it’s like to cross the street when getting bad vibes from someone following. The difference between reality and this artificial retelling of it involves the introduction of the camera, and when one is asked to look, they are culpable with who and what they are asked to identify with, and what they are being asked to see. This proposition is likely too intellectualized for Carpenter, who’d probably call it phoney-balooney. He often said he was just trying to do the job. He can get excited about how the camera moves as evidenced on his many director commentary tracks, but he doesn’t intellectualize why the camera moves this way or that. It has to move because there has to be im.

Yup lol. This sort of thing happens more frequently than we'd probably like to remember in action movies from the 90s.

@willowcatelyn.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 3:41 PM

I bought this on VHS forever ago to show to TJ, because I kept saying "this is a silly movie we watched growing up! Tommy Lee Jones is a hoot! We will have a good time with it" and then as soon as it started I got a George Bush jump scare and it killed the mood lmao

@willowcatelyn.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 2:41 PM

I can't imagine ever wanting to watch any of these movies about the people who are ruining the world rn. I see and hear enough about them in real time. All these guys suck, and I already know they suck, and if I watched those movies I'd probably leave the theater thinking, "yeah that guy sucks"

CAMP is so amazing. Loved this list

@willowcatelyn.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 8:26 PM

Is it fair to call a movie's pleasures "old fashioned" if its choice of bloodshed reminds one of the frenzied camerawork of grisly mid-00s pictures like The Ruins, The Devil's Rejects and The Descent? A throwback to a lean, mean-spirited era in horror, but in hindsight, a good one.
