@xuetingni.bsky.socialReposted by @xuetingni.bsky.socialXueting's #Popculture Digest looks at #Y3K fashion and aesthetics. That's right, it's a new iteration of Y2K, but rather than the colourful retro-futurism of its millennial predecessor, Y3K emerged online around 2024, and casts a colder, bolder look into the more distant future of 3000. 1/
@xuetingni.bsky.socialI'd be fascinated to see some Y3K art or costume designs inspired by some of the stories in Sinopticon, Tombs of the Universe, The Great Migration perhaps, or Starship Library. 4/4
@xuetingni.bsky.socialKey elements of Y3K include use of 3D printed materials as well as fabrics, flowing lines, metallics (especially futuristic silver), the robotic and mechanical humanoid, but also 'wasteland' style with a 'battle-ready' functionality, which would have come from works such as Dune and Mad Max. 3/
@xuetingni.bsky.socialUnlike Y2K which was influenced by trends such as (mainly Western) cyberpunk, Y3K is a futurism that is inspired by from East Asian pop culture, things like K-pop, anime and a new generation of Chinese who grew up in the digital age, pandemic and trad culture revival. 2/
