What faces can you find in the clouds? Hint: Go here for some satellite pictures www.metservice.com/maps-radar/s...

We're all cloud fans here, and theres nothing better than staring at satellite images of the clouds blanketing the country. But sometimes something stares back at you...

A quasi quasimodo looking face in the clouds, with a speckled nose and a vaugely excited expressionA face in the clouds with long flame-like eyes, and an expression that lies somewhere between rage and that feeling when your friend just made a really bad jokeA face in the clouds, with the look of someone who doesnt quite understand whats going on but is just happy to be hereA face in the clouds, looking like an alien that is just slightly too friendly and doesnt realise yet.

⚑ These CBs have chaotic air currents that allow bits of ice to smash into each other, causing static electricity to build up inside the storm until it gets unleashed in a bolt of lightning.

🌞 The increasing power of the sun means spring is our most active season for afternoon thunderstorms. The stronger sun warms the land and causes air to rise. Under the right conditions that air accelerates high up, driving the formation of storm clouds called Cumulonimbus clouds or "CBs".

β›ˆοΈ It's been a relatively quiet start to spring for thunderstorms, but things pick up this weekend β›ˆοΈ β›ˆοΈ Saturday will see the chance of afternoon thunderstorms for the inland South Island, which then spread north on Sunday to affect the east coast from Gisborne down to Wairarapa and Marlborough.

πŸ“ˆ Its a warming trend as we head into the weekend, with maximum temperatures rising into the mid 20s for Canterbury on Sunday afternoon, and possibly the high 20's on Tuesday!

Our cloud of the week winner is Lisa Hill πŸŽ‰. Lisa captured this very cool pic in Alexandra yesterday. 🫧The giant bubble-like shapes are called mammatus clouds. They might look a bit dramatic, but mammatus clouds can just appear in New Zealand when the weather is changing. 🌦️
