Es geht los! Das Wintersemester 2026/27 am @dhssfau.bsky.social ist offiziell eröffnet 🤩
added Biber's place and time adverbials to CLEF (but not yet their MFTE, MAT, or pybiber definitions)
Even before the class starts, though, I'm wondering if students are even going to bother to register and attend :-)
Not sure I have any tips as I'm confronting this for the first time. I'm going to have a very open and honest conversation with my students. We're going to sometimes use AI and talk through the code it produces together. I'll see how it goes!
Now working on the first lecture for 'Applying Python for Digital Humanities and Social Studies'
Slides complete for my first class 'Digital Tolkien' on Wednesday.
Coming soon (besides new features): - a website - validation code - the pyclef implementation
I've decided to start releasing CLEF, my catalogue of lexico-grammatical features, with just a handful of features and then incrementally add more. I have a few hundred in the works but it would be good to get feedback and sort issues out bit-by-bit.
My favourite is when they say things like “my mate Paul says it’s just autocomplete”
Exactly!
I still travel in denalist circles. Just last week I was on a livestream where people in the chat were saying "it's just autocomplete".
(raising eyebrow) what is an oprah?
Welcome to the Golden Grad Students of Tolkien Club :-)
Same denominator mistake with D&D in the 80s and AI use today.
Now I want to know!
Fascinating!
... possibly perform the mysterious feats of invention required to write an efficient program. Only the priests could do that. They were thus unalterably opposed to those mad revolutionaries who wanted to make programming so easy that anyone could to it."
