On the B.C. campaign trail, both the NDP and the Conservatives have spoken against the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

@sobittersosweet.bsky.social breaks down whether DRIPA actually threatens private property rights or makes development less certain.

The big tech companies want you to believe that their default software offerings are the only option, but spoiler alert, there’s a wide array of fantastic software out there. www.eff.org/pages/i-wan...

"There are those who oppose both supervised consumption sites and public displays of drug use... who support rehab as a panacea, without acknowledging research that shows rehab without adequate supports increases fatalities, because those who relapse have a reduced tolerance for drugs."

recommended reading today — Aaron Hemens’ interview with Phyllis Webstad, published two years ago on @indiginews.bsky.social. Webstad is not even mentioned on the federal government’s webpage for NDTR/Orange Shirt Day indiginews.com/news/orange-...

On Parliament Hill this morning for the flag raising ceremony that will begin a day of solemn remembrance on this Truth and Reconciliation Day. It seems even more important this year, in a moment of rising residential school denialism. #cdnpoli #Canada #yow #Ottawa

An audience, dressed in orange shirts (and rain coats) sit on a foggy, slightly drizzly morning in front of a stage set up in front of the parliamentary visitors centre. In the background, one can see the construction equipment renovating Centre Block.

there’s just something very ironic about having a tantrum in the replies of a First Nations journalist on National Truth & Reconciliation Day when you started out by posting your anger at colonial violence. I think almost literally anything else you could do would be a better use of your time.

A burial site for dozens of children who died while attending the Brandon Indian Residential School will be acquired by the province, the Free Press has learned.

huge victory for DULF — also a great day to support @defactomedia.ca which has excellent coverage of this case

@michellecyca.comSep 28, 2026, 10:19 PM

the government does have agency; it's responsible for notifying survivors as a pre-requisite to destroying the records. the concern is that it has not adequately notified survivors but will destroy the records anyway

@michellecyca.comSep 28, 2026, 7:11 PM

really don't need to be lectured on this topic, and my point was that this stems from a Supreme Court decision, not the PMO. plenty of other things one can criticize Carney for

@michellecyca.comSep 28, 2026, 6:48 PM

the number of shitty PR emails I've gotten recently that are using Orange Shirt Day as a hook for things that have nothing to do with residential school survivors or history is appalling. even worse now than it was four years ago, when I wrote this: indiginews.com/first-person...

@michellecyca.comSep 28, 2026, 4:53 PM

you can look at the progress report of the legal services company contracted to notify them, which show that in the last *five years* they have received only 40 requests for forms to preserve/share records, and one request for a destruction form. www.myrecordsmychoice.ca/progress-rep...

@michellecyca.comSep 28, 2026, 4:47 PM

what do you mean "rile future generations"

@michellecyca.comSep 28, 2026, 4:47 PM

a secret third thing (nothing to do with Mark Carney & also not "respecting the agreement" which included notifying survivors of the destruction deadline)

in advance of the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation I spoke to Kimberly Murray & Connie Walker about their efforts to raise awareness about this looming destruction, which survivors may not even know is happening next year. read it today at @thenarwhal.ca:

@michellecyca.comSep 28, 2026, 4:30 PM

yes, but the waiting period was established to ensure survivors would be contacted and given the opportunity to choose whether to preserve their records or receive a copy. since 2021, only 40 people have requested a form to preserve their records, and only 1 a destruction form — of 38,000+
