"We strengthen each other not only in capacity but in thought power," notes Amos. "At the highest levels, our leadership is in communication and identifying what the next big problems are that we think we can tackle together in the ocean."

As Global Fishing Watch expanded, it became clear that the project was taking on its own identity. In 2017, Global Fishing Watch became an independent organization. But our relationship remains strong through shared board representation and ongoing technical collaboration.

The prototype also attracted the attention of actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who provided $6 million in funding after seeing a live demo.

His backing supported further development & @globalfishingwatch.org launched at the 2016 Our Ocean Conference, with DiCaprio & Sec. of State John Kerry announcing it.

Then, in 2014, a conversation at the Economist World Ocean Summit revealed @oceana.bsky.social was also interested in bringing this work to life.

We got to work, building a prototype with Google and Oceana that was presented on a massive LED screen at the 2014 World Parks Congress in Australia.

πŸ€” This revelation sparked a pivotal question: Could machine learning technology automatically recognize fishing patterns on a global scale? The concept gained momentum when the global visualization potential impressed Google's Geo for Good team.

 A BETA version of Global Fishing Watch - a world map highlighting fishing activities. Red areas indicate China, white areas indicate Japan, and yellow areas indicate Spain. The map shows concentrated activities in the Pacific Ocean, especially around Asia and North America, and in various other parts of the world's oceans. There's a timeline at the bottom ranging from 2012 to 2016.

"A pattern popped up that was so obvious," explains our CEO, John Amos. "They would move in a straight line at a steady speed when coming out of port, then slow way down and start turning and moving back and forth where they wanted to fish.”

We designed a year-long satellite monitoring project in response, using radar imagery to detect vessels in the waters around the island. A breakthrough came when working with data from an automated tracking system used on ships called the automatic identification system, or AIS.

πŸ—Ώ How do you monitor one of the world’s largest marine protected areas when it’s 2,000 miles off the coast? The Chilean government put that question forward when establishing a marine protected area around Easter Island in 2012. @pew.org reached out to SkyTruth with the challenge.

🌊 Our next #webinar is happening this Wednesday!
Join us as we share findings from our latest report on global ocean pollution & hear highlights from our #ClimateWeekNYC event, where we discussed how geospatial data can accelerate progress on the planet's most pressing environmental challenges.

The image is a digital invitation for a SkyTruth webinar titled "Turning Geospatial Data into Action on Pollution and Climate." It is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, at 3:30 pm EDT. The image features two vessels in the ocean seen from above, with an oil slick in the water next to them. The text invites attendees to join and hear findings from the latest report and Climate Week NYC highlights.

🌍 The 30x30 Global Assessment provides a comprehensive analysis of progress towards protecting 30% of land and ocean by 2030. 🌊 The Ocean Protection Gap Report 2026 takes a deeper look at the ocean – where protection is lagging and exploring what is needed to accelerate effective delivery.

@skytruth.orgSep 24, 2026, 6:39 PM

#30x30 is the promise. Are we on track to deliver it? Two new reports provide the clearest picture yet of global progress – and where action must accelerate.

Together, they show us where progress is being made, where implementation is falling short, and what needs to happen next. More πŸ‘‡

"We've now estimated its true scale using satellite data β€” the problem is measurable, and potential sources can increasingly be identified. Our analysis also reveals where the biggest gaps in accountability and protection remain, and that is where attention and enforcement need to be directed."

@skytruth.orgSep 23, 2026, 4:56 PM

As part of the session, our Chief Technology Officer, Karl Wurster, just announced our latest report: Global Estimate of Marine Oil Pollution. "Oil pollution is a constant, global issue that happens far more often than the spills that make headlines." πŸ‘‡
