Yesterday, I came across a den where the paleta carts go to hibernate. The unusually warm Fall isn't healthy for them, it throws off their biological rhythm

Wow! Amazing story!

Big Dutch heritage here, including tulip fest in the spring!

Good eye! Yes, saw De Zwaan (bought and imported after WWII) yesterday, the last day of the season of Windmill Island Gardens.

Color photo of a Dutch smock mill, shingled polygonal tower, on a three-story brick base. Four large sails. Wraparound balcony supported by long wood timbers into base.

When in Holland, MI, you best step those freaking gables

Color photo of a gorgeous 3-story commercial building in 1920s Dutch Revival style, dichromatic red brick and sand-colored stone. Tiles on spandrels between second and third floor windows. Stepped gable but with curls on each step. Red tile roof peeking out on sides.Color photo of a 1980s Dutch Revival store building in red brick, on landscaped grounds. Two stories with second story under tall side gable roof. Pair of cross-gables are stepped. On ground floor shutters painted green and orange.Color photo of a Dutch Revival mansion in red brick. Most forward sections are bay on left, with stepped gable and entrance section, toward center, also with stepped gable.Color photo of the top of one bay of a more recent hotel. Above balconies are a round window and a stepped gable, red brick with sand-colored stucco? not sure what stuff under the steps. Top of gable rounded.

In beautiful southwestern Michigan, a person is judged righteous if they can walk barefoot to the end of the south pier at Saugatuck Harbor and back and remain untouched by guano

Color photo of a concrete pier extending into Lake Michigan. A red and white beacon is at the end of the pier. A green and white beacon is visible on a little strip on the far right. Concrete is splotched with seabird guano.

I made a map showing the location of extant electrical substations designed by Hermann von Holst (plus three that have been demolished since I started this survey. Others may have been demolished that I don't know about.)
www.google.com/maps/d/edit?...

Former electrical substation at 4401 N. Clifton, Chicago. It is clad in varying shades of red-orange brick. Three dramatic recessed arches decorated with a geometric tile design dominate this side of the building.

5500 block of S. Komensky, Chicago. Probably built by Oak Park contractor Angelo Esposito in the late 1950s. He has several other similar buildings in Oak Park, River Forest, and elsewhere, including the monkey buildings mentioned in the article from 1956.

Section of the facade of a mid-century modern two-flat. It is clad in red brick, tan Roman brick, and multi-colored faux stone around the entrance on the left. The outside door is aluminum with panels of orange, turquoise, and green glass and there are two clear glass blocks to the right of the door. Above the slightly slanted porch roof is a large stone or concrete wall that contains a bas relief of the god Mercury (I think), running to the left with the sun setting in the background.Section of the facade of another mid-century modern two-flat. It is clad in red brick, red Roman brick, and multi-colored faux stone around the entrance on the left. The door is on the left and is protected by a slanted brick wall with three glass blocks in it on the far left and a tilted flat roof above. Above the porch roof is a large stone or concrete wall that contains a bas relief of a butterfly with the sun setting in the background.Section of the facade of a third mid-century modern two-flat. It is clad in cream brick, red Roman brick, and multi-colored faux stone around the entrance on the right. Above the slightly slanted porch roof is a large stone or concrete wall that contains a bas relief of a naked guy playing a flute with the sun shining in the background.1956 article about three buildings in River Forest, Illinois, designed by Angelo Esposito, who also designed the three previous buildings. The three in River Forest have bas reliefs of monkeys depicting see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil. All have the sun setting in the background.

Honey locust appreciation post

Color photo of two medium-sized honey locust trees on a city street at golden hour. Leaves are fall color of yellow and mostly on the branches, though there is a sprinkling on the sidewalk.

I brake for mosaic tiles. Infinity Arts Academy, formerly Gordon Tech High School.

Color photo of entrance to a former parochial school. It's midcentury modern, warm bricks and big windows. Above windows is big section of green and white mosaic tiles. Front doors under overhang held up by brick pier. Simple cross on support extends above roofline. Sidewalk curves toward entrance.Closer-up of big section of mosaic tiles in previous pic. A neat non-pattern of shades of green, white, and gray, with a little pink/tan for fun.

Yeah, they complete the look!

@tudoraf.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 5:45 PM

Same layout, but no snazzy blocks, at 1849-59 W. 34th St., ca. 1962

Streetview of two midcentury two-flats in yellow brick, each with slanted roof over wide porch. Glass blocks next to front door. Swoopy section of stone (left building) and red Roman brick (right building) around basement windows starts past the left wall of each building and ends into a mini-wall in front of the porch, slanting down slightly as it goes and ending in rounded corner.

There are some styles that have eclectic in the name (Spanish Eclectic, the malign French Eclectic). If we're honest, Tudor Is probably English Eclectic. But I've also seen Eclecticism as a general term for historical revival styles.

Vegetation in a receptacle no. 43, Coyle & Washtenaw

Color photo of the design of a basket of fruit in a recessed lunette. Basket has diamond pattern in weave and is wide and flared at the top. Fruits visible include apples, grapes, and that carnivorous plant-looking fruit that may supposed to be a pomegranate.
