The main thing I took from this article on geoneutrinos - neutrinos produced by radioactive decay in the mantle - is that it is really hard to measure a flux which is basically “what’s left after we subtract a bunch of neutrinos from other sources.” www.quantamagazine.org/neutrinos-from…
Interviewer: can you explain this gap in your resume? Geomorphologist: Water gaps are fascinating landforms. I mean, that river didn't flow uphill over that ridge and then slice down through it. Did you know we have several great examples right here in Wisconsin?

In addition to the many other cool things, "The holotype and paratype were discovered independently by two different research groups working in separate field areas of the Hell Creek Formation. The decision was made to combine the efforts of the two..." How often does that happen? ⚒️🧪😎#FossilFriday
Another massive flood caused by a landslide in Nepal - this one in the Budhi Gandaki valley. No decent cloud-free imagery from @planet.com yet but this is from @esa.int Sentinel2.
Why golden eagles’ migration follows the Rockies (audio clip): I do wonder whether the orientation of the thrust sheets relative to prevailing winds makes much difference compared to there being mountains at all, but still a cool interaction between biology and geology!

Here is the Big Barn fault crossing the parking lot of The Woodlands High School in The Woodlands, Texas USA. It is a down-to-the-basin normal fault, a typical Gulf Coast growth fault. Faults like this are not seismogenic, but their continuous movement causes much damage to infrastructure and houses
Note the right lateral offset of the yellow centerline of you look across the fault. (Traffic spotters had my back for this quick snap).
On October 11, 1984, geologist Kathryn D. Sullivan became the first US woman to take a walk in space, spending more than three hours outside the Challenger shuttle in Earth's orbit ...
In a typical autumn, Italy's Alpine larches peak around mid-October, the Apennine beech woods late in the month, and Calabria and Etna not until early to mid November. Averaged over 25 years, day by day.
