From "Voyage historique de l'Amerique Meridionale", 1752, by Jorge Juan y Santacilia and Antonio de Ulloa. It documented the French Geodetic Mission to Peru (starting in 1735) to measure a degree of the meridian near the equator, proving Isaac Newton's theory that the Earth bulges at the equator.

Engraving of a Guayaquil balsa raft with a large triangular sail, crew at the stern, stacked cargo bales on deck, labeled parts and an ornate title cartouche above, shown on choppy sea to illustrate the vessel’s design and proportions.

Learn from Sjupp about plant classification, with Linnaeus even naming a rather odious genus Sigesbeckia after one of his vocal critics, Johann Siegesbeck. How's that for revenge!

Celebrate #InternationalRaccoonAppreciationDay with our animated video featuring Sjupp, the cute yet feisty companion of Carl Linnaeus. Inspiring Linnaeus' thinking on animal classification, the wily raccoon was initially grouped alongside bears!

The Society’s Linnaean herbarium is particularly rare because it is an example of a personal herbarium of a famous naturalist that has been kept in its original state and has not been remounted or relabelled.

Two smiling researchers posed beside archival herbarium sheets displaying pressed leaves and clusters of round seed pods, with a handwritten accession number and a red institutional crest visible, highlighting historic botanical collections.

Interpreting herbarium sheets is tricky. How does one find out more about each pressed plant, its geographical origin, collector, and date of collection? This lecture will give you a peek - Join Jacek Wajer and Isabelle Charmantier as they decipher little clues.
