New preprint from the lab!
We built an atlas of functional ensembles across the zebrafish hindbrain, linking whole-hindbrain activity to behavior, structural organization, and molecular features.

This was so long overdue!... optogenetics truly revolutionized neuroscience and more. Congrats @deisseroth.bsky.social

Garden #spiders are everywhere right now—big, beautiful ladies, still in the hub of their 🕸️
But they are not just waiting, at night they also 💤! We found behavioral signatures of sleep in the wild. Out in #AnimalBehaviour w/ @mherberstein.bsky.social
Mormon crickets are the OG cannibalistic swarms.
Now accepted and published --- with many thanks to the referees for helping sharpen the manuscript. Long time since the first notes. Good to see it officially out.
Impossible without the work of @gkolyfetis.bsky.social and @jiv1066.bsky.social
Many swarming animals display coloration, but testing function is hard because manipulating color in groups is laborious. We used VR to alter the appearance of desert locusts, which occur in two distinct social/color states. We believe this is the first evidence that coloration affects swarming.
Swarm models are abstract, but life is full of color! Locust warning coloration modulates how individuals track others, especially in cluttered environments. Visual modeling, VR, remote sensing. With @jjfosterlab.bsky.social, @theswordlab.bsky.social, @icouzin.bsky.social
We are hiring! Come join us in the Straw Lab at the @biologyunifreiburg.bsky.social . Seeking a scientist to work on the neural and computational mechanisms of visual navigation in honey bees. uni-freiburg.de/en/job/00005...
A murmuration of starlings above Sardinia, Italy. One of my favorite natural phenomena.
