@irishtimes.com IT just dropped their Winter Edition of climate reporting and imagery dissonance.

The Super El Niño will cause extreme weather, when more people than ever will struggle to heat their homes due to fossil dependency.

Celebrating this phenomenon is ignorant, harmful journalism.

@irishdocsenv.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 1:04 PM

People need assistance during this fuel crisis, but this is not the way to do it.

Government has bowed to pressure from right wing lobbyists that chain us to fossil fuel dependence.

The debt for this will be paid in human health and wellbeing.

Another climate fiction short story on our blog, by @orlaghgaynor.bsky.social🌍

This installment envisions an alternative future of Ireland's food security, inspired by ideas from John Gibbons @thinkorswim.bsky.social 🌽

When we let fossil fuel companies influence policy, we weave failure into governance. The science-policy-action interface is not so much a gap as it is a wilful roadblock, built on inertia, status quo bias, cognitive dissonance and above all, greed.

Our @johnlegge.bsky.social on @newstalkfm.bsky.social this morning, calling out the failure of our government to enforce and implement real road safety solutions - not just legislation! 💪

Very true. We might run another public event on this soon - the situation is really dire

The situation is dire. I gave two talks last year on Planetary Health - I had to actually update my slides from the July event to the October one, in order to reflect ANOTHER boundary being crossed. THAT'S how fast this is happening.

The Planetary Health Check 2026 report has been released. www.planetaryhealthcheck.org

🩺If our planet were an ICU patient, it would be crashing.

🚨All alarms blaring.
🩻Chest compressions.
⚡Defibrillator.

Instead, our leaders are ignoring the crash call.
We need full, committed action NOW.

Stratospheric O3 depletion - green zone
Atmospheric aerosol loading - green, but nearing boundary
Ocean Acification - just crossed from green into orange
Freshwater change - into organe
Land system change- orange approaching red
Climate change (CO2 concentration)- orange approaching red
Climate change (radiative forcing) - well into red and black zone
Biogeochemical flows (Phosphorus) - red zone
Biogeochemical flows (nitrogen) - red into black zone
Novel entities - red zone
Biosphere integrity (functional) - red zone
Biosphere integrity - red into purple

As well as hearing from Tom - and looking out for any glimpses of @betterstreetsforbirmingham.org folk - I look forward to perhaps learning a bit about the work of @irishcyclingcmpn.bsky.social, @irishdocsenv.bsky.social, @ibikedublin.bsky.social, and @dublincommuters.bsky.social.

See you there?

16,000 heat-related deaths in Germany - yet the German government now spends €2.5billion on fossil fuel subsidies. Meanwhile, here in Ireland, we don't even know how to calculate our heat-attributable deaths, and are expected to spend a whopping €7.5billion in fossil fuel subsidies this year!!! 🤯

After their hottest summer on record, France reduces their Just Transition Agency funding by 30%.

The cognitive dissonance & backwards steps in climate action is not unique to Ireland. We need to break this inertia, or governance will follow mob mentality.

This is the impact of the climate crisis.

This is not a one-off event. We will see this more and more, with regular reporting of how life-saving treatment gets delayed

This was preventable through decisions that should have been made decades ago.

Our government is patching over our energy crisis with paper and spit, at the cost of climate and health. They must stop sending the bill for their gross incompetence to the general public, who will be bled dry - figuratively, and almost literally!

@irishdocsenv.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 7:51 PM

You may well be correct about solar eventually getting much cheaper, but this isn't happening fast enough to match the urgency of climate action. The science demands rapid, drastic system change, and this can only be delivered through governance - but ours is moving backwards.

@irishdocsenv.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 7:23 PM

While it may be true that many people have the means to install solar, this leaves a huge equity gap in terms of energy access and fuel poverty. Policies must support everybody of all financial situations in just access to green energy. Government are instead backsliding on climate action.

@irishdocsenv.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 7:11 PM

Government are desperately trying to put a band-aid over the problem, while refusing to implement real, long-term solutions. The Irish public are victims of the fossil capitalism that our government insists on chaining us to - our people, our patients.

@irishdocsenv.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 4:21 PM

The decline of our Irish language is intrinsically linked with colonial ecocide.

Tá ár dteanga, ár mbithéagsúlacht agus ár gcuid sláinte fite fuaite.

Our language, biodiversity and health are intertwined.

These solutions mean we can look after our patients wholly, beyond their medical condition, at some of the most difficult and distressing times of their lives. Instead of this, Minister Chambers would rather entrench us in fossil dependence. There is no debate about public health expenditure.
