#PoemsAbout #Bites @thebrokenspine.co.uk
I will put a reading in the comments. Midnight here in New Jersey. I expect to be out and about during the day, so I may be s little slower playing catchup.

THEM BONES

suggestive of cannibalism
bones have been found in caves
broken and gnawed by our neolithic ancestors

pseudo-christian white nationalist politicians
have been found in congress gnawing bribes
suggestive of economic cannibalism

ted cruz craves a “mexican on monday”
slurping blood from undocumented calvaria
on the tailgate of an unmarked ford explorer

mike johnson who nibbles knuckles
under his desk behind a locked door
claims he “doesn’t know anything about that”

cinnabar stained bones found in certain strata
suggest deliberate caretaking
and ritual ceremony

shitty grifters smeared with trump diaper slime
licking their greedy fingers suggests that
dc is unceremoniously drowning innocents
@merrildsmith.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 12:21 PM

You brought the 🔥 to this one, John! 💪 (Nothing would surprise me any more about this regime.) I especially like the sounds in the cinnabar stained bones lines.

This poem is about a brilliant woman and her son. They continue to inspire me. He wasn’t able to remain at his local school which she was devastated about, but described her relief that ‘the walk of shame’ was over. #PoemsAbout #Bites @thebrokenspine.co.uk #poetry

A moving poem, Rachel. I had to look up SEND, but I like the play on words of the title, and I love the line "moth-tuned into echolocation." She sounds like a wonderful mother, that "walk of shame" so difficult for both of them. 💙

From my out of print collection "Port of Souls"
for #PoemsAbout #Bites and @thebrokenspine.co.uk

Hand Biters

Always snap at the hand that feeds,
cossets, cuddles and hugs,

fists, hits and kicks. Oppose,
depose, make of it yourself.

Pull on the leash, snap the manacle,
challenge this ships captain,

sit on your plastic chair. Tell
your voices you'll decide yourself.

If she does not wake you know your job.
Before she closed her eyes she rehearsed

tasks that you must be complete. How
to empty her home, sell it, pass

your childhood on to others. Be firm
In what must be done. Make yourself.

Friday again so it's thanks to @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk for another #PoemsAbout #Bites
This one was inspired by my Dad's love of sailing and stories of the coast from Texel up to the Wadden Zee.

The Bite of the Bight
Whispering winds transformed
Northerly storms
Giants of the Arctic
Whistling down, around,
Engulfing de Duitse Bocht
Ship sheltering between isles and land
Evading the short grey Northern Sea For something worse to come
Silent swells forecasting
Omens of volatile seas
Of something worse brewing,
Frozen fingers gathering bights,
Shortening the sheets, Reefing sails ready For rolling waves,
Unexpected mud and sand Shifting creeks, twisting channels The triumvirate of Wadden rivers
Leviathans alone
Carving treacherous shoals
Surging tides, billowing waves,
Rolling with the wind
Calling the Waarschip to the depths Entrenched, consumed, chilled By a bitterly biting sea

So atmospheric! Wonderful imagery. I could feel those biting winds!

Dating is never easy. #PoemsAbout #Bites

dating

me?
i love to fly
take evening strolls
and going for light bites
i have no taste for garlic
or for wild religious rites

oh no, you're another vampire, aren't you?

yes
@merrildsmith.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 12:07 PM

Made me laugh. Maybe there's a vampire dating app? 😂

Good morning! My poem for #PoemsAbout #Bites is a revision of a poem I wrote for Paul Brookes @thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social ekphrastic challenge with art by @karenpgonzalez.bsky.social Thank you as always to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk I'll be back later!

Poem:
Choices: Divergence, Convergence

In the woods, you choose a road,
this one, or the other,

perhaps they are the same—or not—

perhaps you meet a snake with jeweled
lapis scales,

perhaps he offers
you this or that,
his tongue flicking words
you catch poison-sweet
on your tongue--

perhaps instead
you see a wave of wildflowers,
nodding their heads,
scenting the path

just before the strike, the bite.

Art work by Karen Pierce Gonzalez, a snake in spring green, aqua, yellow, and orange, studded with round blue jewels or buttons. Black background.
