Been thousands pouring through Shetland in the last few days

P@pmandrews1973.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 6:06 PM

Shetland 2026, thats a wrap. A great list of birds, headed by the madness of Siberian Blue Robin, but equally a great craic as always. Many thanks to all the resident + visiting birders; special mention to @ashmabirder.bsky.social, @archieraven.bsky.social + Jake for sharing the experience with me

Final day on Shetland comprised seconds of Grey-cheeked Thrush at Quarff + King Eider off Lerwick, Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll at Sound, Merlin at Maywick, Siberian Chiffchaff at Hoswick, LT Duck + 6 Purple Sand off Lerwick + last gasp Kingfisher (rare on Shetland) at Clickimin just before the ferry.

Giddy final hour on Shetland when news of ‘an American thrush, prob Swainson’s’ broke just 6 min away. We got there and found ourselves looking at a Grey-cheeked Thrush. And one with wacky white in the tertials too! #ukbirding

Common Rosefinch added for the trip at Scousbrough plus new Barred Warbler at Skelberry + RB Flycatcher at Exnaboe. Also seconds of Bluethroat at Fleck, Red-backed Shrike at Scousbrough + Western Bonelli's Warbler at Skelberry. Then a mad final hour with Grey-cheeked Thrush at Easter Quarff.

Also a day long sizeable push of thrushes (predominately Redwings), Siberian Chiffchaff and seconds of Arctic Warbler.

This morning on Shetland Mainland was black, all BLACK, with dips on Black-faced Bunting and then Black-throated Thrush. The day improved with Bluethroat, American Golden Plover, 2 Little Bunting, point blank Quail and Barred Warbler.

Another good day on Shetland started with elusive Olive-backed Pipit at Clickimin. Then off to Unst for Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler at Valyie; also Redstart, Twite, Brambling + 2 Slav Grebe. Back to Mainland for a v showy Radde's Warbler in small walled garden at Tangwick. More promise for tomoro.

A better day - Western Bonelli's Warbler at Skelberry, Red-backed Shrike + drake American Wigeon at Spiggie & Short-eared Owl at Brow Marsh. Also 5 Scaup, 3 Slav Grebe, 4 Stonechat, Redstart, Purple Sand, 5 YBW, Wheatear, 2 Garden Wrblr, Barnacle G, 3 LT Duck + a retrospective Olive-backed Pipit.

A trip out northeast to the Vidlin/Lunna/Swining/Hamnavoe area produced only limited rewards with Siberian Chiffchaff, Yellow-browed Warbler, Merlin and Red Grouse; this albatros would've been a real bonus. A small pot of gold this afternoon with Arctic Warbler at Fladdabister.

Yesterday was tough going on Shetland with gale forces. Dips on Lapland Bunting + Buff-breasted Sand at Eashaness/Stenness & Arctic Warbler at Gott (which today turned into a Greenish). Day only partly mitigated by a showy Red-breasted Fly at Busta, c15 Redpoll at Sound + Common Tern at Lax Firth.

A good day despite wet + windy conditions on Shetland with Red-breasted Flycatcher at Ollaberry, Great Grey Shrike in valley east of Bixter (below) & 2 Buff-breasted Sand at Fleck. Also Jack Snipe, Scaup, Slav Grebe, Bonxie, Curlew Sand, Ruff, GN Diver & Pale-bellied Brent Goose in south Mainland.

Nice selection Ruth

Brief views of an Olive-backed Pipit was the best of a difficult day on Shetland; missed Quail which Arch + Jake nearly stepped on at Aithsetter + dipped a GG Shrike. Also Yellow-browed Warblers, Lsr Whitethroat, Bar-tailed Godwit + 3 Purple Sand to round off the day. And there's always the views.

P@pmandrews1973.bsky.socialOct 3, 2026, 5:37 PM

A lifer Cliff?

P@pmandrews1973.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 6:16 PM

Yes - looks like Sun and Mon will be wiped out (save for some car-based birding)

Second day on Shetland and already time to trot out the cliche "hard work". A day in south Mainland produced Barred Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Yellow-browed Warblers, Siberian Chiffchaff, Pale-bellied Brent Goose, Redstart and 2 Shelduck (a Shetland tick for me).
