“I staggered back to the underground And the breeze blew back my hair I remember throwin' punches around And preachin' from my chair Well, who are you? (Who are you? Who Tf?

I watched
the acorn fall

its brown shell
turning

through the autumn light

and somewhere
between leaf
and earth

a hundred summers
opened

green shade
deepening

I picked it up

still warm
from the day

and held it
in my palm

the tree I would not see
already rising

through my absence

Photograph taken in the woods of Central Virginia of an acorn lying on the ground in the sun in front of an old oak tree.
