Omg you won the meat tray!!! This has happened to me once and only once when – get this – I’d popped into the Courthouse at Taylor Square for a cheeky one on the way to a vegetarian dinner party… I had to leave the tray there and keep only the glory 🙃

Where’s Australian politics headed? Do politicians get multiculture? Spend an hour with George Megalogenis being asked a supersmart set of questions by @betootaadvocate.bsky.social, or possibly @thebetootaadvocate.bsky.social, on his excellent new book, Three Shocks youtu.be/I9OKBhmmeQQ?...

Let’s be clear. AI is not an intelligence; it’s not being trained, it doesn’t think, it doesn’t have agency, it's not gone rogue and it’s not alive. Humanising it helps Big Tech bypass laws they’ve already broken and weaken laws they’re keen to flout. Read on: thepoint.com.au/opinions/261...

What is AI? @doctorow.pluralistic.net: An unprofitable “word-guessing machine” with “an outcome that seems like thought without thinking”. Weakening Australia’s copyright protections “would turn Australia into the data-laundering centre of the world”, warns @copyright.com.au CEO Josephine Johnston.

"The global race that AI developers are in is to secure as much of what humanity has already created as possible, and then churn it through their models" writes @anatolitis.bsky.social

It's not "training" – it's assimilation.
It's not "intelligence" – it's content generation.
It's not a "life form" – it's a commercial product.
Humanising it absolves Big Tech of responsibility.
Let's change how we talk about AI. My latest for @thepointau.bsky.social:

Great to join Shane Doherty on 4BC this morning to talk the future Australian republic. Can’t wait for you all to see the Republic Youth Charter that will be presented to parliamentarians in the new year – created by the people who lead our future.

No, an app that assimilates words to guess more words and hack systems is not a life form. Just because its proprietors refuse to take responsibility for containing its dangers by pretending it’s an intelligence, doesn’t mean we have to parrot their taglines.

“Look at those trees, they’re like lungs coming out of the ground. And there’s all this stuff going underground. Then all these paths are like organs in the body. The world is a collective organism. It works. I don’t know how, but it does.” The superb Shaun Tan:

Years ago I enjoyed a beautiful NYE al fresco at the top of Canning. Then, as I walked the full length of the street to get home, strangers kept inviting me to join them every few metres – some had put entire lounge and dining suites out for the night! Perfect 🌈

You Grik? If like me you’re getting very tired of hearing the word «πλασμαφαίρεση», here’s a useful little explainer in English

“Art is not about representing so-called beauty, but rather to question the existing judgment about everything in politics, in life… but this kind of art is never encouraged. People want you to behave, want you to be a nice guy…”

This monumental project is the work of Taylor Ellis Architecture with Richard Crooks Constructions – but you wouldn’t know it from this coverage. All such reporting should name the architects, as should any coverage of works of art name the artist – reporting on public art is particularly egregious.

The world’s scientists have been entirely unambiguous on what’s needed to prevent climate catastrophe – united and clear. None of those urgent calls ask governments to do “a bit”

“19 datacentre applications in the pipeline were seeking a combined 19,714 megalitres of water per year – or 4% of Melbourne’s current supply. Currently, the 50 existing datacentres use less than 1%” – but the new rules won’t apply to current or proposed centres: www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

The Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom is advocating for a media freedom bill that “would enshrine the principle of media freedom in our legal code. Under it, parliament would have to treat press freedom as something to be protected like any other human right…”: www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

This afternoon the local butcher passed my father and I enjoying a late lunch in the old town square and, recognising Stráti but being in too much of a hurry to come say a proper hello, he asked the waiter to bring us a bottle of wine with his compliments. Reader, I’ve just hit peak Greece 🥰

🤔 “it’s hard to escape the idea that Spencer and the Windsors are just elite content creators now” – congratulations! You’ve just defined monarchy.
