For families like Saintange’s, access to care means more than a doctor’s visit. It means the opportunity to regain stability, protect their health, and build a better future.
With support from ZL, the FAES-BID Project, and partners, clinicians at Sainte-Thérèse Hospital in Hinche provided Saintange with a medical consultation. They diagnosed her with anemia, knee pain, gastritis, and cervicitis.
During an outreach visit near her home, the program team selected Saintange’s family to participate. After she spent three years focusing entirely on her family’s needs, she finally received care herself.
The program supports households facing a combination of illness, poverty, and geographic isolation. For many, these challenges have only grown amid Haiti’s ongoing crisis, making access to care more difficult and, at times, dangerous.
The FAES-BID Project supports these families. The Fonds d'Assistance Economique et Sociale (FAES) finances the project with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) and Zanmi Lasante (ZL), Partners In Health’s sister organization in Haiti, implements it.
Like many families in rural Haiti, Saintange faced impossible choices: Pay for transportation. Buy food. Seek medical care. When resources are scarce, even accessing a doctor can feel out of reach.
For years, Odina Saintange put her family’s needs before her own. The 56-year-old mother of six lives in a rural community outside Hinche, Haiti, where access to health care is limited. When her husband lost his vision, she became her family’s sole caregiver and provider. 👇🧵
