That’s entirely understandable. There’s something in my brain that makes me want to finish it anyway.

Do you flip through and count the remaining pages and hours when you are enjoying a book or when you are not enjoying it?

Landscapes of Proteus

#artsky #ocsky #scifi #cyberpunk #protheus

A futuristic alien landscape in a flat graphic style. Dark soil covered with clusters of small golden mushrooms fills the foreground. In the distance, a pale plain with purple and red patches of terrain stretches between hills and rock formations. On the right, enormous mushroom-like plants rise on long, thin stems with broad, flat caps. A human figure in a dark suit stands on a rocky ledge on the left. Muted palette of cream, gray-green, purple, brown, and gold.

It’s hard to choose, but Addie LaRue and the Villains series are some of my favorites too.

Reading "Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil," I'm immediately reminded how much I love the intricate, architectural tension in V.E. Schwab's writing.

What's your favorite of hers?

In the strange limbo between wanting to hold on to that vacation feeling after it ended and the pressure to be productive.

Moth 🔦 first picture in my October series!

A digital illustration of a giant moth fae with glowing yellow eyes clinging to a lighthouse. At it's base, a lighthouse keeper emerges from his house to investigate.

Thank you, I was very cozy under a warm blanket by the fire pit. My husband wondered how I could sit so close and not overheat, but I could be cold in summer.

@evcaldwell.comOct 4, 2026, 11:41 PM

I don’t draft every time by firelight, but I’ve found that the words flowed easier when I was sitting in front of one. I never had an issue of wind pushing the flame outside of the pit.

There's something about writing by firelight. The look of every flame is the same, but each has its own rhythm, forging a new path through the air. Stories are like that. We recognize their shape but delight in their unique movements.

Growth and Decay

I saw a sapling growing from the stumps of a decaying tree while walking my huskies and imagined the ghost of the dead tree watching over its successor.

Thank you! You’re very kind. I lucked out this morning with the heavy fog.

@evcaldwell.comOct 3, 2026, 9:12 PM

Thank you! That really means a lot. I hope you’re able to unwind from the stress soon.

Welcome back! I thought that might be you. How are you doing?

Reveling in the silence
before the patter of rain,
mourning the silence after.

Stylized black and white photo of thick fog on the forest hillside after the rain, matching the quiet mood of the poetry it’s paired with. A narrow waterway is just visible at the bottom of the natural landscape of pines and evergreens.

thread of my comics and artbooks that are good for halloween season! first up, it's bitter--a short horror comic about two kids and their bully who end up in a neighbor's basement, where they find out an uncomfortable secret. literally takes place at Halloween, very on-theme:
