Located at the foot of Mount Yufu in Kyushu, Lake Kinrin is famous for its natural hot springs (onsen) and freshwater springs that feed simultaneously into the lake basin. The submerged gate belongs to Tenjin Shrine (Tenjin-sha), a small Shinto sanctuary situated along the lake's edge, dedicated to Tenjin (the deified spirit of scholar Sugawara no Michizane) and local water deities.

The construction of aquatic torii gates represents an ancient Shinto tradition of marking sacred thresholds (kekkai) across natural bodies of water, acknowledging the presence of kami (divine spirits) within lakes, mountains, and coastal bays.
