Oh I also felt like that! Gruelling after a while.

Oh definitely. The vulnerability of all those bereft people.

Let’s not forget people like Conan Doyle were convinced spiritualism was real.

I’m listening to a podcast about AI psychosis and it reminds me so much of spiritualism in the early twentieth century: also a con, also preyed on people who were convinced it promised some eternal truths wrapped up in great personal significance.

Yearning: an occasional series.

A tabby cat sits in a shaft of pale light on a herringbone floor in a kitchen that is 50% dog bowls. A dog stares at him intently from the arm of a sofa as if he might actually send him on a side quest. We are moments from chaos.

I really want to laugh at this but I also don’t want you to die in a fireball. Or boule de feu.

Farrow and Ball have started emailing me in French which makes me feel very sophisticated if embrouillé.

Today is Michaelmas, a quarter day in the Irish calendar, and traditionally when rents were paid & contracts signed. It's also the last day to eat blackberries - after today, they belong to the Devil and will make you sick!

A story in alt text.

Inciting incident: A large confused orange spaniel discovers the love of his life, a tabby cat, asleep on a pile of blankets, on a bed. Dramatic tension: The spaniel looms affectionately over the cat, who has just opened bright green eyesCrisis/resolution: the spaniel immediately remembers the cat is the scariest creature he knows and il fiche le camp tout suite. All the cat has done is raise his head and Disapprove.Fin: The cat, with ears set to reverse disapproval, relishes his solitude.

Do not recommend.

I can sum up today with this story: I treated myself to a g&t on the plane and they gave me ginger ale instead of tonic and I drank it anyway.

In the latest Taskmaster NZ, Rose Matafeo says she'll fight for a thing "...unless I'm slightly tired, a little bit shy, or I don't feel like it" and that might be the most relatable thing I've heard this year.

New on the blog today, my thoughts on THE BLANK WALL by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding.

An utterly gripping novel in which an ordinary woman finds herself in an extraordinary situation. Filmed by Max Ophüls as THE RECKLESS MOMENT, it's a 5-star knockout read! 💙📚

Japanese writer Jirō Osaragi (大佛次郎) and his cat, Japan,1930s.

Seated upon a woven cushion beside a sliding wooden frame, acclaimed writer Jirō Osaragi cradles a pristine white cat against his lap, his hands holding the animal with gentle, practiced ease. Draped in the soft, cascading folds of a dark traditional kimono, Osaragi turns his face toward the lens with a quiet, engaging gaze. The stark white fur of the feline creates a vivid focal point at the center of the frame, catching soft directional light that illuminates its watchful eyes and slender ears. Behind them, the subtle grid of a shōji screen and the deep gloom of a tatami room frame the pair, establishing an intimate domestic stillness captured in warm monochrome tones.
Photographed in the 1930s, this portrait captures Jirō Osaragi (1897–1973), one of early Shōwa-period Japan's most prominent literary figures, famous for his historical adventure novels such as Kurama Tengu as well as modern postwar reflections like Homecoming (Kikyō). Osaragi was celebrated not only for his prolific pen but also for his lifelong passion for felines, often sharing his home in historic Kamakura with dozens of rescue cats at a time, famously remarking that his feline companions provided an essential emotional anchor throughout his writing career. In 1930s Japanese literary culture, informal portraits of writers (bunjin) in their home studies served as a beloved subgenre of documentary photography, combining modern media craftsmanship with the timeless monozukuri (artisanal mastery) of portrait arts to reveal the human interiority behind celebrated literature.

I feel I got more enjoyment from the article than I would from the books. The distillations are very clever. 👏👏👏
