As far as I can see this is virtually the only leverage the US still has vis à vis Ukraine and Europe. It might not enjoy the consequences of carrying out the threat.

I am so sad to hear of the death of Chris Wickham, an outstanding medievalist and (among many other things) a great economic historian. He was also an outstandingly good academic citizen, who in every respect left the rest of us in the shade, and a very nice man. May he rest in peace.

Europe has a pretty obvious political interest in US diesel prices being high as we approach the midterms, so hopefully this will not have much of an impact...

This is a good article and I would love to see the play. It reminds me yet again how today’s economics is so apparently utilitarian, yet so uninterested in the actual wellsprings of utility.

It is not a sensible discipline from which to draw your philosopher kings.

It has just been pointed out to me that there are five economic history journals in this recent list of top 100 economics journals. Something for economics departments to ponder, and it gives me some hope not just for economic history but for economics...

In Denmark a scientist plotted data and research findings into Claude, only to see Anthropic publish the findings as something the LLM had conjured up on its own. The theft of one scientist’s data and work translates into false claims about the model’s ability to generate research #ai #eupol

Reliable, unless you are expecting us to live up to our WTO commitment to you not to discriminate against you as regards trade policy. A deal is a deal but not that one, it doesn't suit us right now.

Ireland would be well advised to learn from continental Europe where this dangerous pest has already spread widely, spurring efforts to control it as for example here:

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

"Unverständnis und Kritik an der Entscheidung in Heidenau kommt auch vom Künstler und Erfinder der Stolpersteine, Gunter Demnig. Der Beschluss passe nicht zum "C" in der CDU. Was die AfD anbelange sei er allerdings nicht sehr erstaunt - nach den Aussagen der Partei zum Thema deutsche Vergangenheit."

The foreign minister of Malaysia spelled it out yesterday: "International law cannot be an optional menu where rules apply only when convenient. If the system is to survive, impunity cannot be tolerated"

I do think that editors need to be given more resources. If every not-obviously-fake submission could be fact checked by someone before it crosses our desk that might help. But the current situation is unsustainable.

@kevinhorourke.eurosky.socialSep 23, 2026, 6:26 PM

Part of the response has to be to punish fraudsters. And maybe part of the response will be that “if this paper COULD HAVE BEEN” generated by AI we will desk reject it. I don’t know what will happen, but spending time dealing with this stuff as an editor or referee will strike many as not worthwhile
