A Girl and her Mother

I walked over to where I'd strapped the sample. Her young, innocent eyes were wide with fear. At my approach, the girl jerked violently in her restraints, her IV rattling like a snake. She would have screamed had I kept her vocal nerves online. "If you keep moving like that it's only going to hurt more," I told her. It wasn't a complete lie, I needed samples of her blood on tap, so why shouldn't I take the opportunity to shape her reactions to pain while her mind is at the peak of its neuroplasticity? A true huntress needs to revel in sanguine bliss, and the girl was still squeamish at the thought of hurting a clone.

Definitely a mix for me. The phrase "keeping the peace" comes up multiple times in the narrative, whereas with New Years Eve I was just doing an insufferable pun about the woman's name. Mostly though I just try to be clever.

A moment languished fretfully as I became sensate again, and in that time two things changed. One: the bear, previously stationary, begun charging at me anew, and two: the rush of adrenaline that had been masking the impact of Mother’s earlier slug was no longer sufficient. I winced as I stood up, as pain tore through my ribs and core. My breath wheezed through my chest as I realised I couldn’t do it, any of it. Mother told me to hunt, so I hunted. She told me to savour my conquests, so I relished in my prey’s capture. She told me to fight, so I beat all her neophytes bloody. Yet, it was never enough. I bore divine expectations that I couldn’t possibly comprehend on my mortal shoulders and she always wanted more…

Perhaps this was the test. Perhaps ‘more’ was a finite resource, too, just like pain and fear and violence and love and worship and everything she ever wanted from me.

So, I stood tall. I stared down the feral beast my Mother had sicced upon me as it charged forward, teeth glistening with hunger. It raised its arm up to strike and I turned, bearing my back to it. Its strike landed true, and I felt a fatal gash tear open across my back. My eyes found my mother’s, beacons of ethereal silver glowing against the dark, and all I could hope was that I’d learned her latest lesson. But as I died, the screams that hit my ears were not ones of pride, but of astronomical anguish, as my mother screamed, “ORIO-”
