“There is little doubt that we would have been disgracefully beaten if all the shells and bullets fired by us had passed harmlessly over the enemy and if all of theirs had taken effect”

We congratulate Anne Carson, winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. Carson is a contributing editor at Granta and a regular writer for the magazine. In celebration, we have lifted the paywall on all her contributions to our pages.

ANNE CARSON!!!! the best thing to come out of a bad “is poetry dead?” take i wrote years ago was the poetry recs in the comments. “if you’re asking, clearly you haven’t read Anne Carson!” they were right. autobiography of red! glass essay! albertine workout! red doc! life-changingly good! WHAT WAS REALLY IN THOSE BAGS ON YOUR WINGS

@petridishes.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 3:20 AM

i think it’s much scarier when you’re eight but this does give you a sense of the visuals share.google/kL2PQcRQulns...

@petridishes.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 3:09 AM

but the most alarming one was the Drug Vulture (Google says his name is Scumble?) who opens his enormous wings to offer professor Bodywise various small ziploc bags of drugs??? HAUNTED TO THIS DAY

@petridishes.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 3:08 AM

puppets that include: Evel The Weevil, a daredevil whom professor Bodywise has to… discourage somehow? get to wear a helmet? I just remember a crash sound effect and a crumpled piece of plastic and Professor Bodywise staring at that crumpled plastic and saying “evel! That could have been YOU”

@petridishes.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 3:05 AM

imagine a cafeteria full of schoolchildren watching as a very high-energy actor earns the title of Professor Bodywise by urging earth’s most terrifying puppets to make better health choices

@petridishes.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 3:01 AM

Professor Bodywise’s Traveling Menagerie! did this chaotic Kaiser Permanente show come to anyone else’s elementary school and give you nightmares about the Drug Vulture
