@anildash.com is one of the tech pundits that I occasionally enjoy. I'm a big fan of naming things clearly - notwithstanding respect for the consent of the audience - and at least being thoughtful about what influences we let bend and twist our language.

white evangelical Republicans whose experience of Catholicism is limited to people like JD Vance assumed that their allies on abortion would be their allies on everything and miscalculated so badly here. even the most conservative US bishops cannot function without their immigrant parishioners!

We can’t just move past what SCOTUS has permitted this Administration to do to people who have lived and worked in the U.S. for years and even decades.

I didn’t.

Notwithstanding your opinion that in fact a theme I took from the peripheries of my community’s municipal (including school board) elections, which happen to be next week. Apparently my concrete, tried example offends your reductive prejudices.

E) As I said elsewhere I would expect that it’s easy to find plenty of people to have constructive disagreements with *within* one’s own groups. The only people I’d send out to talk with white guys are other straight white guys.

@borealchrys.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 8:53 PM

D) At the same time I think it’s disrespectful to those people from oppressed groups who have carried the effort of advancing social issues by engaging with their neighbors - an out queer person, a BIPOC person breaking into hostile professions by claiming this work is worthless. It’s not.

@borealchrys.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 8:53 PM

… oppressed groups have any particular duty to engage in convincing anyone. B) I certainly do not advocate debating anyone’s humanity. C) Everyone will have times in their lives when they need to withdraw and regroup and others when they can be out there pushing. Community is built in many ways.

@borealchrys.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 8:53 PM

Good thing then that the case you’re insinuating is what I explicitly excluded. Your bad faith argument doesn’t deserve any additional engagement but for the sake of mutual bystanders some more clarification that you could have found on your own. A) I don’t believe that members of …

@borealchrys.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 7:58 PM

One viable argument is enough. And different themes will be in the debatable zone in different places. Also, it’s always possible to break a lance for *someone’s* humanity. What have you tried?

@borealchrys.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 5:45 PM

Well the solution would be to pick those for whom this is not the case, yet you disagree? Talk to people doesn’tnean walk into the neonazi pub to convince them not to be racist, but to talk to your uncle about why you don’t want a Flock camera, or support kids with undocumented parents in yr school

@borealchrys.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 5:35 PM

It’s also a bit disrespectful to blithely reject the idea in the face of the work that people have done and are doing every day to make their perspective visible. The gay person who comes out at work and to their family. The BIPOC person in a white-dominated space and many more.

@borealchrys.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 5:35 PM

… very fundamentally social issues *are* advanced by people talking across disagreements. Realistically, most members of minorities would talk with someone they share minority status with. People will work on family and community members. Minority status doesn’t preclude disagreement

@borealchrys.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 5:35 PM

I think the OP deserves a lot of side-eye for the rose-rimmed glasses and lack of reflection on his own role and opportunities to do that. For example, instead of telling his audience what to do he could… do it and report on the results, thereby leading by example. But I also think that…
