Fan of legislatures and legislation! Past President, Canadian Study of Parliament Group. Co-Chair, CIAJ Legislative Drafting Section. All views personal and most likely uninformed :)

Oh! Oh!
27 years ago today, the National Post asked this question... and I'm still mad about it.
Hot Saturday night with parliamentary Scrabble in progress
This weekend in Canadian parliamentary history: On October 10-11, 1990, an all-night Senate filibuster over the GST came to a smoky halt at 4:30 AM. The cause? A fire built by a 21-year-old unhoused man living in a tunnel under the Library of Parliament. He'd been there for a week.
Also on this day in Canadian parliamentary history - October 9, 1979: Commons Speaker James Jerome is dragged to the Chair (a tradition!) and Opposition Leader Pierre Trudeau fakes a kick to Jerome's private member's business, immortalized in this press photo...
Hahah hear me out - the Canadian parliamentary dreidel design: Gimel (everything) : Centre Block Hey (half): The Senate Shin (put in): The Commons (it’s elected so that works I think :p) Nun (nothing that turn): The Library (it’s neutral) :)
Absolutely not! Parliamentary PJs are exactly what marathon sittings require! MPs would love them for their vote-a-thons and the late Senate sittings should be done in style (and comfort!) I’m still hoping that the Parliamentary Boutique will stock this festive creation…
🚨🚨🚨🚨 UK Parliamemt Christmas PJs now available for purchase! This is not a drill!
On this day in Canadian parliamentary history - October 9, 1990: This exchange in the Senate, one of my all-time favourite Hansard captures...
It’s Canadian Library Month! Shout-out to this Canadian library patron for their 2.5 star review of my book 🤣
On this day in Canadian parliamentary history - October 8, 1957: Some 2,000 flags and 10,000 yards of bunting go up in advance of Her Majesty's visit to Ottawa. The B&W photo ran in newspapers - the colourisation is computer-generated.
If my research is correct, UK Houses of Parliament Christmas Jumper release dates: 2021 - 7 October 2022 - 10 October 2023 - 13 October 2024 - 10 October 2025 - 17 October 2026 - ??? (Google seems to know of the page but the link doesn’t work 😭😭😭) When will it be?!?
Today in Canadian parliamentary history takes us back to 1917. During the War, the Parliament was extended (lasting over 5 months and 10 days). October 7th was to be the last possible day per Canada’s request to the UK (which needed to amend the constitution for the extension).
On this day in Canadian parliamentary history - October 5, 1957: In a rare move, the PM announces Mark Drouin is both appointed to the Senate and appointed its Speaker. When the session began, he was introduced to the Senate and from the Clerk's chair announced his Speakership.

My excellent tour guide pointed out many things but perhaps they were called something else…
I said I’d post more later but I’m not sure what to tell you other than that it’s a great little legislature very much worth the visit!
Had a very sweet visit to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick! Excited to taste the Speaker’s honey!!! (I will post more about the visit later but I’m so stoked about this honey you have no idea… :p)
Just shot you an email :) Sadly is just a day…
