@sam.re -something for you.

Can you even see the info about the Nobel prize in chemistry on @theguardian.com's website? I had to use the ctrl+F option to find it. WTF does a scientist need to do to get some publicity, if a NOBEL PRIZE isn't enough?

By contrast, remember how much Jason Arday we saw over summer?

Screenshot from the Guardian; big headlines about film and television and a teeny heading about the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

They did, poor things. They also incubated coffee cups...

What a great idea! In ecology, papers from the 1960s are definitely interesting because of how ethical approvals have changed over the years. Believe it or not, we are no longer allowed to swap albatross eggs for beer cans to see if the birds will still incubate them.

Can you name the women who have won a science Nobel prize? πŸ§ͺπŸ”¬πŸ§¬βš›οΈ

Since the Nobel prizes were first awarded in 1901, few women have been recognized in the categories of physics, chemistry & physiology or medicine.

Most birds that grow breeding plumage might look a bit fancy, but are at least recognisable as the same species as before. Enter the Malagasy pond heron, Ardeola idae. Nothing's too fabulous for that one. (Left: non-breeding/juvenile, right: breeding individual) πŸ§ͺπŸͺΆπŸ¦š

Maybe write some next Sunday? But watch out, there will be plenty of junior parkrunners stomping all over your hard work...

Wonderful to see poems by @brianbilston.bsky.social in Florence Park today. I hope they become a regular fixture!

Pavement with chalk writing:

In the park,
the tall trees are waving
in the afternoon breeze.

I wave back
only to realize they are waving
at the person behind me.

A few weeks ago I realized that it has been almost 29 years since I started the #fiddlercrab information webpages. This mind-blowing realization gave rise to some introspection about how/why the site was created, which I have now explained on a new About page: www.fiddlercrab.info/about.html

I put together a new starter pack: all colleges and permanent private halls at Oxford University @ox.ac.uk in one place.

Eleven are still missing, so if you know of one that's not part of the list, but is on Bluesky nonetheless, please get in touch.

Enjoy!

Insect declines threaten wildlife far beyond insect world.
Apart from being food, insects provide other species with homes, protection, chemical defence and sanitation - to name a few things.

Great review article by @r-cooke.bsky.social with BEAUTIFUL visuals.

Many freshwater fish eat insects
Parrots nest in termite mounds
Chimpanzees use insects on wounds
Poisonous frogs get toxins from ants and beetles.

73% of studied vertebrate species eat invertebrates

What have ants ever done for us?

"Green roofs, living walls, biophilic cities: we talk about these as though pairing architecture with living tissue were a modern idea. It isn't. Ants had it first."

Leonotis has bright, nectar-rich, tubular flowers that are sunbird favs. Pollen is placed on the top of the head. When cultivated in the Americas, hummingbirds visit & pollinate the flowers in the same way (but hovering). πŸ“·: Nectarinia famosa by Ruperl CCBYNC4 #ornithophily #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱
