I read Due’s The Reformatory (based in Jim Crow Florida) and I’m now on Enriquez’s Our Share of the Night (Argentina under 80s dictatorship). I want to keep this streak going. Any recommendations?

Another way of putting it: Anne Carson cut a groove that is so deep it’s hard for me not to fall into it. But I’m only doing something different because of that influence in the first place.

On Anne Carson, funny enough just recently I was thinking, how her influence has become so ubiquitous that we’re ready to resist it somewhat, but her winning the Nobel is a reminder of just how big she is for me. She helped me bridge the experimental, the scholarly, the lyric in ways that shaped me.

Editors have to make judgments about editorial scope and have a limited number of things they can platform at a time. Clearly the author’s career survived missing out on appearing in this magazine.

Lots of the quote posts are framing this editor’s rejection as this major oversight or error, worthy of schadefreude, which I think misunderstands what editors do. Editors pass on great stuff all the time but it doesn’t mean they don’t recognize its value. They even say so explicitly in this letter!
