so much of my reading is horror that making october extra spooky is a struggle, so i'm gonna post as i go and share the scares with the power of multiplicity. starting with @horrorsong.blog's The Wingspan of Severed Hands, a story where "it was all a dream" presages not amelioration but certain doom
@daviddemchuk.com's Red X braids a stalking monster laden by all the unbearable weight of tradition with a more immediate history that refuses to be crushed and a disorienting tumble from grounded personal essay to inescapably enmeshed in the story
🤣🤣🤣
Possibly! This one was pretty negative in a way that I wish I hadn't read (not the reviewer's fault--definitely my own for reading), but I did have another one ages ago that was a DNF around the same point and that definitely would sell the book (it was basically, "this is so eye-rollingly gay"
🤣🤣🤣 Maybe I should make an ad centered on that! (I stopped reading my reviews on GR a while ago for my sanity, but accidentally saw one where that was actually a key element of them DNFing, ahaha)
Friends and anyone who picked up (but esp. read) TETK--what convinced you to pick it up? Was it any kind of marketing? Trying to work out what I should focus on in terms of promoting it, because I often feel very clueless in terms of what works & what doesn't 😂
Congrats!!!
Omg! I don't think I even learned chien-chaud in French Immersion, ahaha. That's hilarious. And yeah--I never experienced anyone being rude about my French in Quebec. I'm sure it does happen, but even when we visited Quebec City and some smaller towns, people were really nice
Looking up the accents now to compare, ahaha (but honestly, I think Josh Hartnett probably is better. I think it's a bit uneven and skews too Irish more often than not, but effort is definitely being made)
I've never seen The Shipping News 🙈
😂 That's extremely fair!! I lived in Montreal for 8 years, but obviously that's a very urban accent as well (and people are largely bilingual to a degree that they have very neutral English accents)
someone so much as acknowledges that Newfoundland exists 🤣). His performance overall is good though!
Not great. Not the worst I've heard, but not the best. I think it sounds way too Irish a lot of the time. That said, I looked it up on here and saw a bunch of other Newfoundlanders saying they thought it sounded native. They're incorrect though (which I assume is because we all just get excited when
Oh wow! That's quite a range. 🤣 It's funny what people think a Canadian accent is (though tbf, we all have pretty homogenized ideas of what "national" accents are).
Yeah, she sounded Scandinavian to me 🤣 Which, tbf, is something my sister and I had asked of us when first went to university on the mainland. We'd get asked if we were from Norway or New Zealand because people couldn't place our accents
voices and sayings--though a lot of NL sayings exist in Britain and Ireland as well).
John's). But we're also definitely experiencing the same homogenization that everywhere is as people's accents are influenced by the media we grow up with. My accent is pretty neutral (but my family are also from England originally, so even though I grew up here, at home I was hearing different
What year were you here? We had snow this June as well 😭😭😭 It was the winter that wouldn't end. The accents definitely vary place to place! There's no one Newfoundland accent. It's funny, because I find the St. John's accent fairly strong compared with where I grew up (CBS--pretty close to St.
Yeah, and there were local actors in it as well in some minor roles--that was really great to see. I think the leads acted well, but their accents skewed way too Irish (except the Ocean Sciences lady--I have no idea what her accent was doing at all, though I enjoy her character 😂)
