Thing I am not concerned about: a job candidate bringing an iced coffee to an interview. Thing I am very concerned about: companies using AI to screen out and not hire disabled job candidates.

It baffles me when businesses view wheelchair users as third-rate tagalongs and not as valuable customers who often love to shop, tip very generously, and simply want to be treated with the same level of decency and have access to come and spend our money at your business like any other customer.

“Yes, it’s accessible, but it is completely humiliating and would not be acceptable to a non-disabled person,” is not accessible.

Image description: a disability-related meme image with an orange, green, and purple Halloween theme. At the top, bold black text with a lime green background reads:

“Ways to be Inclusive of Disabled Trick-or-Treaters this Halloween:”

Underneath this, black text appears on an orange background and reads:

“If you have stairs, greet trick-or-treaters at the foot of the steps instead of at the door.

Compliment their costume, not their mobility aid (unless it is very obviously part of the costume).

Do not assume rudeness if a trick-or-treater says nothing to you.

Have non-candy treats available (like stickers, toys, etc.) for those with dietary restrictions.

Remember that trick-or-treating is all about fun, regardless of age, costume, or disability.”

Prior to each point, to the left, is a colorful outline of a bat, either lime green or purple. Between the title text and lower text, the handle “@MisaOnWheels” appears in smaller yellow text.

As a disabled person, I have met disability advocates, those who share knowledge with others, accessibility advocates, those who raise awareness, and those who share their lives to make others with disabilities feel less alone. I have not, however, ever met a single “sickfluencer.”

Something that astounds me is the level of accusation related to being disabled. Disabled people are accused of faking their disabilities. Disabled people are accused of not filling out paperwork properly. Disabled people are accused of being a problem when the real problem is ableism.

Image description: an accessibility-related infographic with a lined note paper background. There are five lines/points related to accessibility. From the top:

The first line contains a minimalist image of a manual wheelchair user with different shades of pink. Pink text to the right of them reads, ““It’s accessible once you get up the stairs” is not accessible.”

The second line contains a minimalist image of a manual wheelchair user with different shades of green. Green text to the right of them reads, ““It’s accessible if you have someone to help you” is not accessible.”

The third line contains a minimalist image of a manual wheelchair user with different shades of orange. Orange text to the right of them reads, ““It’s accessible if you can leave your mobility aid behind” is not accessible.”

The fourth line contains a minimalist image of a manual wheelchair user with different shades of blue. Blue text to the right of them reads, ““It’s accessible, but you can’t access the restroom” is not accessible.”

The fifth line contains a minimalist image of a manual wheelchair user with different shades of purple. Purple text to the right of them reads, ““It’s accessible just because we call it accessible” is not accessible.”

Centered at the bottom of the image is the handle “@MisaOnWheels” in light pink text.

Nursing homes should never be a replacement for accessible housing. Read that again.

Ramps do not decrease curb appeal.

No, ONLY the houses of disabled people being accessible is not enough. ALL new homes should be built to allow anyone to be able to visit family, friends, loved ones, and be able to move without having to worry about expensive renovations and aspects non-disabled people do not need to worry about.

A 32-hour work week would make the workplace more accessible to many disabled people and allow full-time employment for those unable to work a full 40 hours. A shorter work week would also allow for increased flexibility for appointments, symptom management, and self-care without missing time.

These wheel covers allow wheelchair users to convert their wheels into mini skis to easily sled over snow and ice.

No Bow, No How. Say NO to a data center in Bow, NH. 💚

A digital poster with a green background. Large, bold black text at the top reads, “NO BOW, NO HOW.” Smaller black text towards the bottom reads, “Say NO to a data center in Bow, NH.”
Between these two sets of text are two images. On the right, there is a picture of an industrial-looking building with pollution fumes coming out of its chimneys. On top of the image as a red circle with a line through it, denoting, “no.“ To the left of this image is a cartoon picture of mountains with a green checkmark on them, denoting, “yes.“ appearing on the right hand side vertically is the handle “@MisaOnWheels” in green.

Massive data centers do not only have a negative impact on the environment but also on the well-being of disabled people. 👨🏻‍🦼

An educational image with a light gray background. At the top, lime green text reads, “How Data Centers Negatively Impact Disabled People,” with a dark gray banner in the background of this text. Below this, smaller black text reads:

“Pollutants released by massive data center generators are major triggers for severe respiratory symptoms in those with and without respiratory disabilities.

Constant noise and light pollution trigger symptoms in those with sensory disabilities and sensitivities.

When the massive water consumption impacts local water supply, disabled people lose access to water in their homes.

Many disabled people do not have the resources or ability to "just move" if a data center in built nearby.”

To the right of the text is a minimalist image of a power wheelchair user with blonde hair, a green shirt, and blue pants with black shoes. They are sitting in a red power wheelchair facing the text. Behind them is a semi-transparent image depicting a minimalist cartoon-style factory with fumes coming out of its chimneys.

The handle “@MisaOnWheels” appears in gray vertically on the right side of the image.

Inaccessibility is outdated. Seeing inaccessibility still incorporated into modern building design not only reflects outdated attitudes towards the disabled community but reminds disabled people that, at the end of the day, these design choices that keep us separate are intentional.
