A clipping from The Yorkshire Post letters page dated Monday October 12, 2026. The top letter, headlined "No excuses as Burnham breaks Brexit taboo", is written by Jas Olak, Vice Chair of Leeds for Europe. It commends Andy Burnham for bravely raising the idea of rejoining the EU, arguing that exporting firms are handicapped by new trade barriers, and notes that MPs should no longer avoid parliamentary debates on the UK's relationship with Europe.

Andy Burnham confirms what previous PM's - May, Johnson, Truss, Sunak and Starmer - failed to, that Russia interfered in the Brexit referendum.

The idea that rejoining the EU would take the UK a decade is a myth.

Finland went from application to full membership in less time than it took us to negotiate and sign a trade deal with India.

🚨 Tomorrow is the day MPs will debate rejoining the EU.

This is your last chance to email your MP and ask them to attend the debate.

Now is the time to make the case for EU membership! β™₯️

Oh Jane, hang in there. My sis and I often say we probably would be happier if instead of actively being socially and politically engaged we just lived in ignorant bliss. So far we've not succumbed to the latter.

I've been a member of the lobby for well over a decade. Not a single one of my lobby colleagues has said a word about the Conservatives banning me from their conferences, without any explanation. Contrast with the US where even Fox News stood in solidarity when Trump banned news outlets he disliked

⚠️ He might want a fight on Brexit. Bring it on. Farage and his fellow Brexiteers have been proved wrong time and time again. πŸ‘ This is a fight we will win.

β€œThe question is not whether we can afford to remain within the Convention [ECHR].
It is whether, in an increasingly dangerous world, we can afford not to”

Political liars and lightweights, like Badenoch and Farage, must never be allowed to take that risk.

In short, if Britain were to leave the ECHR, it would not be
'taking back control. It would be surrendering influence over the rules and institutions that help keep us safe.
The debate about the ECHR is too often conducted as though it were a choice between national sovereignty and international law. That is a false choice.
The Convention advances British interests because it reflects British values: liberty under law, democratic government and the accountability of power.
Walking away would not make Britain freer. It would make Britain weaker.
