And folks, if you can't wait a week to dive into the 1931 'Frankenstein' (and really, who could?) you can listen to it right now on Patreon for as little as $3 per month! www.patreon.com/halfpricehor...
My next episode:
New episode! Time to dive into another horror classic this Halloween season, with Stanley Kubrick's (not Stephen King's) 'The Shining'! open.spotify.com/episode/1V8B...
Because we were chatting about Mike Flanagan earlier today, I wanted to share my essay I wrote earlier this year on how both THE LIFE OF CHUCK and JACOB'S LADDER gave us such compelling explorations of dying. I'm really proud of this piece. from-the-desk-of-the-horror-chick.ghost.io/exploring-ja...
I’m just going to start saying, “Fuck you?” to people I don’t like instead of “Fuck you!” It’s offense-proof.
Why does this man always look like he’s stuck in the first act of The Hangover?
And just to make it absolutely clear, these were movies that didn’t deserve to flop. They made the most of their second chances. But nobody would have seen them if they weren’t so cheap to show.
It’s so interesting to me that HBO created a whole generation of cult classics by running theatrical flops over and over because they were cheap to show but still had the cachet of “recent releases”.
Excellent movie and they got a real expert to talk about it!
I mean, if anyone gets to reference those steps it’s an Exorcist sequel.
This is so fucking cool!
I legit think this may have been the most fun I've had appearing on one of Bede's shows--it was just such a wild movie to talk about!
Caught the first Sci-Fi episode at a friend’s house because I didn’t have cable, had a house party of my own for the Netflix show. The Gizmoplex premiere I watched in Seattle with my girlfriend, and I was sat for Sting of Death at the theater premiere.
Saw the movie in theaters, I think it was at the Lagoon in Minneapolis and the screen was calibrated wrong so you could see the puppeteers but I didn’t care. I was charmed from start to finish.
I saw my first MST episode when I was channel flipping as a teen and landed on local station KTMA because they were playing a scifi movie. Then I noticed a row of theater seats at the bottom of the screen and my whole brain lit up when I understood what they were getting at.
Oh, absolutely. I did an episode on this movie and I said at the time that a young Kevin Williamson must have seen it and thought, “Hmm, this feels like it needs just one or two more drafts….”
Yes, that was the original 1975 Jaws. Wonder what Flanagan would do differently?
It's so Scream-coded. The villain's final monologue is straight up the same motive as Billy Loomis.
World Premiere of BLACK SHEEPS in Sitges tonight! So proud to share the night with two of our stars, Tabatha Killick and Nathan Meister! Sitges is a genre filmmakers’ dream: treated like blimmin royalty!
Remember when Miranda July promoted her book with a series of pictures of her whiteboard? That’s the result of choices and creativity, two things AI can’t do, and it made me go right out and buy her book.
