Oh I would LOVE to join this. Was just thinking how Im missing having a space for concrit from like-minded (aka terminally online) peeps

Just wanted to share my experience bc it's been a rare win in this field for me. I'm still shocked when I make an extremely dumb fangame and before I even send it to a fandom friend they've already played it and are blowing up my inbox with jokes, it's really a fantastic feeling.

@heiden.itch.ioSep 14, 2026, 4:31 PM

The other glaring difference is the level of monetization in these two scenes as well. It's pretty hard to make real lasting friendships when your engagement with this person is their primary source of income. 😬 You can make coworkers! But money has a pretty chilling effect on the elasticity of art.

When you start from an entirely original story, people have to get pretty close to figure out if your rhythm is also their rhythm, so you end up with a lot of rejection bc they didn't realize this was a rock song when they were anticipating pop. (+ Typical player entitlement lol)

I like character X from game Y because he's a sad middle aged man caught between his heart and his duties and I'm interested in the interplay of that on screen. Other fans also most likely like smth similar and if we both like X, we are much more likely to have more things in common!

I find it easier to connect with people via fandom than purely from a gamedev lens (and I saw vtuber scene also mentioned in the comments, yeah 1000% that too) because which fandom and which characters you choose do a lot of the weeding out of people who just don't get what you're putting down.

Those communities are pretty rare but wow are they amazing ! Honestly just having one fellow Freak(tm) is all you really need for the majority of the benefits of community.

This is SO CUTE .... 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

@heiden.itch.ioSep 4, 2026, 4:43 PM

YO I gotta check that out. I haven't read anything by them before but I am DEF impressed.

@heiden.itch.ioSep 4, 2026, 4:42 PM

I've always loved really old jrpg, farm sims etc but I was never able to talk about them with friends bc it was trendy. Now that there's a whole cottage industry it cozy gamers it's like people will at least allow you to bring up those games but the moment you start talking about the mechanics OOPS

@heiden.itch.ioSep 4, 2026, 4:39 PM

This isn't a new thing but its always a delight to see in fiction. Growing up (and even now) it feels like there's a bingo list of things you're "allowed" to like and if you fall outside of that list you have to wait for someone else to change the landscape for it to come back into play.

It's fascinating how this book was written in 2002 yet it's like. It's only gotten better with age. It talks about the over reliance on social media, on how that flattens our culture and language and how people who try to not participate in the system are seen as weird and as untrustworthy.

@heiden.itch.ioSep 4, 2026, 4:13 PM

Just finished Feed by M. T. Anderson and oh my god it was amazing. When I talk about how good old YA books used to be, this really is a shining example of that imo.

The whole castle is walkable right now so I shifted gears to doing the expressions for the talk sprites! After this is the walking animations!

@heiden.itch.ioAug 31, 2026, 1:03 AM

I picked this project up again after a 2(?) year hiatus so some of the assets are pretty old lmao. But nothing I can't fix up!

@heiden.itch.ioAug 31, 2026, 1:03 AM

Super excited how this little project is turning out!!!! I feel way more confident with my camera placement and scene transfer code hehehe ☺️ #gamedev #indiedev

This was a beautiful write up! Wow I also had the same exact experience of trying to find community in gamedev spheres and only finding weird hussle culture. (I was being suggested to use AI for my art assets.... ) It's really cool seeing your whole journey, its really inspiring !!!!
