I think those who saw it (myself included) have tended to like it or at least find it interesting, but the terrible reviews following the bafflingly bad looking trailers ensured there weren’t many of us.

I have many answers to this. One of them is that the version of pro-pollution lobbying that replaced outright climate denial - which is basically that we can’t stop climate change on our own, so there’s no point worrying about it domestically at all - has triumphed, for now at least.

As rocky as his exit was, I think to some extent this may be a positive Nate Erskine-Smith legacy.

@aradwanski.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:16 AM

Yeah, I’m afraid that’s probably true.

Watching fans of the ostensibly less evil team doing the tomahawk chop, and thinking that MLB makes for a tough hang after the Jays are out.

Cleveland Cliffs’s CEO continuing to reveal himself as a cartoon villain is, while horrible for his Canadian employees and customers, a service to anyone preaching greater scrutiny of Americans who buy our assets. www.theglobeandmail.com/business/art...

I’m sure it’ll get easier when we also have to navigate DAZN for the CFL games.

It’s crazy to me that, at last check, one of the two Canadian sports channels (TSN) still hadn’t figured this out. Raptors games are split between them and Sportsnet, and I wind up watching more of the latter’s because of the start-after-the-kids’-bedtime option.

On reflection I might be giving the oil industry a bit too much credit here, since it hasn’t exactly made the most enthusiastic case for the pipeline. So congrats to the province and the feds, at least.

@aradwanski.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 3:22 PM

Congrats to the oil lobby, Alberta government and PM on getting us to a point where a relatively pragmatic editorial board can champion a new pipeline without even having to address environmental/climate concerns (save for passing carbon-capture reference). www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/edit...

I saw Digger, which I gather might put me in an exclusive club. I can’t say I entirely enjoyed it and I don’t know if it’s actually good, but I’ve never seen anything quite like it and I’m not sorry I went.

But taking on the full cost of building the thing, when private proponents didn’t want to touch it even with those other supportive policies, basically means betting on demand (and the supply to meet it) beyond what the industry itself is willing to do. That’s deeply weird.

@aradwanski.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 1:02 AM

Not blocking a pipeline if there are proponents, fine. Some degree of subsidization to mitigate project risk (sunk costs of it’s thrown off by regulatory issues, legal challenges, etc.), maybe.

@aradwanski.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 12:58 AM

I won’t belabour this because I’ve written about it before, but the part of Carney’s pipeline pivot that I find impossible to justify is the government taking on the demand risk.

Important reporting here that feeds into broader concerns about a lack of focus on growing Canadian companies, relative to investing in big energy and infrastructure projects. thelogic.co/news/maple-8...

I spoke with Canada’s ambassador to the EU - Jonathan Wilkinson, a familiar face from his time in cabinet - and got a little into the nitty gritty of potential opportunities, compromises and timelines in the current talks. www.thestar.com/business/opi...

I dug a bit into Carney’s latest plans to fast-track permitting for major projects. The meatiest part is overdue, while some more marginal aspects are more questionable. www.thestar.com/business/opi...
