La Révolution française est l’adolescence de la révolution, aussi un adolescent l’incarna-t-il mieux que tout autre. - Cheikh Hamidou Kane, *L’aventure ambiguë* (1961, p. 146)

All repressive regimes loathe education, students, and educators. One more case of the infamous (euphemism alert) French police violently attacking school teachers. We can ofc remain silent but they are coming for everyone!

One thing that strikes you with the concurrent protests in India & France is the elaborate deployment of state machinery (police/military/army personnel). Whilst France uses lethal weapons, Indian police controls w/ batons. Oh and Pakistani Gen Z sending love to their Indian friends is everything.

“Je suis docteure en philosophie, professeure, ce jeune homme ne va pas m’expliquer quelle est la mission d’un professeur.” Dear Elwan, if I may, please consider becoming my student in MA. We’ll read Paolo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed to understand *how* education can be emancipatory.

And pain and the capacity to feel it it have been linked to moral capacities in racialised populations. Which brings us full circle back to Sylvia Wynter as we ask who the human subject of human rights is; what claims we’re making on moral capacity and humanity when we claim machines feel pain.

@sandeepbak.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:32 AM

How do post or de - colonial operate when the police remain fettered to the colonial continuum? Unflinchingly so. ‘De’ offered, among other aspects, a delinking from colonialism, and ‘post’ was a temporal hiatus as well as discontinuation of colonial ideology. Colonialism redux, everywhere.

In a video, we witness a French police officer (CRS) shove his baton in the rear of a high school boy. French police have a long history of sexual assault on Black and Maghrebian men. Césaire’s imperial boomerang is in full swing! Not a few of us have alerted to such enactments of violence before.

THE UNIVERSITY & SOCIAL
JUSTICE STRUGGLES ACROSS THE GLOBE

*A fresh analysis of conditions of resistance and sites of struggle in the institutions of higher education' Shahrzad Mojab, co-author of Revolutionary Learning
*Essential reading for anyone concerned with the state of higher education. This brilliant book documents inspiring struggles across the globe that connect to broader social movements' Steven J. Klees, co-editor of The World Bank and Education
Higher education has long been contested terrain. From student movements to staff unions, the fight for accessible, critical and quality public education has turned university campuses globally into sites of struggle.
Whether calling for the decommodification or the decolonisation of education, many of these struggles have attempted to draw on longer histories of popular resistance, broader social movements and radical visions of a fairer world. In this critical collection, Aziz Choudry, Salim Vally and a host of international contributors bring grounded, analytical accounts of diverse struggles relating to higher education into conversation with each other. Featuring contributions written by students and staff members on the frontline of struggles from 12 different countries, the book explores what can be learned from these movements' strategies, demands and visions.
Aziz Choudry is Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair at McGill University, and Visiting Professor at the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation (CERT), University of Johannesburg. He is editor of Activists and the Surveillance State
(2019) and co-editor of Just Work? (2016). Salim Vally is Professor and Director of CERT at the University of Johannesburg. He is co-editor of Education, Economy and Society (2014), and Reflections on Knowledge, Learning and Social Movements (2018).

PLUTO PRESSLESSONS IN STRUGGLE, STUDIES IN RESISTANCE
EDUCATION, LEARNING AND STRUGGLE KNOWLEDGE
Regarding learning, our primary interest is not in the formal degree and diploma programmes, courses and curricula but rather in the spaces in which students, faculty and non-academic workers find themselves planning, mobilising and resisting together, including official student organisations, trade unions, campaigns and informal networks and modes of activism.
As university academics and educators with backgrounds in popular/ movement radical adult education, research and organise outside of universities, we are keenly interested in the politics of knowledge production and the relationships between informal/non-formal learning in the course of struggles for change, and processes of more formal education. We take a sympathetic, but unromantic view of social movements and social movement knowledge production, well aware of internal tensions, contradictions and limitations that can be produced nd reproduced as well as powerful visions and ideas that emerge from struggles for change. internal contradictions as Well as Globally, within activist networks and social movements, there is a reuen rich history of processes and practices combining informal, perhaps VISio incidental learning with more programmatic political education - and indeed theory (Choudry, 2015; Choudry & Vally, 2018). Scandrett and la
Ballantyne (2019) note that:
[i]n the university, formal education (for credit) is given privilege and priority above non-formal education. Non-formal education however can be more self-directed, collective and democratic. A dialectical relationship between formal and non-formal education is a dynamic struggle in which both forms of education are valued and critically interrogate one another.

How did they fight? French student movements in the late 2000s and their contentious repertoire

From 6006 to 2010) four national-level student mobilisations happened in France. In the winter and spring of 2006, university students, joined by high school students and workers, opposed the French government's project of creating a precarious labour contract specific to young people, the Contrat première embauche (CPE), which was abolished in April that year. In the summer of 2007, they fought an overhaul of higher education, through the loi relative aux Libertés et Responsabilités des universités (LRU). This reform made universities manage their material and human resources, without giving them enough public money.
Students contested it in the autumn and winter of 2007, and once again in the winter and spring of 2009, as higher education employees went on strike against some decrees enforcing the law. Finally, students joined an interprofessional movement against pension reform in the autumn of
2010. These last three mobilisations were unsuccessful. Broad-l During these four mobilisations, students mostly used strikes, mass demonstrations, occupation of campuses and general assemblies as their main decision-making tools, the latter being a direct democracy procedure in which any student can participate, speak and vote. The fact that activists often adopt the same modes of action over time is well documented by sociologists of social movements. Referring to this, Tilly (1977) called contentious repertoire 'the whole set of means

‘Systemic inequalities - problems so deep rooted’, yes. And they are racial inequalities. French banlieues are in an overwhelming majority populated by negatively racialised communities. It’s a positive sign that the world knows it and that the mobilisation has broad-base support from universities.
