At least 75,000 Gazan’s killed by Israel’s war on Gaza since 2023, including 21,000 children. But there are still thousands under the rubble. 1,481 killed since the ‘ceasefire’ last year. Around 730,000 displaced. 174,256 injured, with at least 1/4 with life-changing injuries.

Water companies made £340mn last year accepting industrial wastewater they don't have the facilities to adequately treat.

“Industrial pollution must not become a lucrative business for water companies" says Amy Fairman of @riveractionuk.bsky.social.

Thought the sewage scandal was bad? Think again.
Sewage works are also a major industrial waste disposal route. Power stations, airports, hospitals, landfills: ~608bn litres last year. No independent regulator.

Water firms made £340m+ from it. Works can’t remove most chemicals in contaminated Heathrow wastewater. PFAS anyone? It ends up in rivers, seas, farmland. With River Action I built a database of 26,000 consents to show the scale. And mapped it: watershedinvestigations.com

All the data Watershed + @riveractionuk.bsky.social compiled for this investigation has been added to our Watershed Pollution Map, so you can explore what's occurring at a wastewater treatment plant near you, via:

We’re cutting mercury emissions, but climate change could bring yesterday’s pollution back into the food chain.

Thawing permafrost, wildfires, and warming waters may change how mercury moves and becomes toxic methylmercury.

608bn litres of industrial wastewater entered sewage plants last year.

Sources include power stations, abattoirs, landfill, some with consents for chemicals such as mercury + cyanide - entering plants not designed to treat such waste.

Our new report, out now:

Pollutants that survive treatment are discharged into rivers, lakes + seas as “treated effluent”.

Chemicals that bind to solid waste can end up in the sewage sludge spread on farm fields as fertliser.
