It's finally publication day for this decade-in-the-making book. @noamlupu.bsky.social and I explain why working-class jobs make up 70% of the average democracy's labor force, but only 2% of the average democracy's national lawmakers had working-class jobs when they got into politics.

Fair enough! Almost sounds like someone should rigorously study this!

@simonweschle.bsky.socialAug 11, 2026, 8:15 PM

But surely the first year is the time when students are the most likely to try out different things and when they find out whether something is for them (or not).

I'm not sure I agree. Of course first year is arbitrary, but MIT has been doing it for a few years now and I don't think there's any clamor to have all years be P/F.

100% agree.

@simonweschle.bsky.socialAug 11, 2026, 6:27 PM

Yes! I see so many students who avoid challenging classes they are interested in because they're afraid they will fail at it. Which they might, and that has to be ok!

@simonweschle.bsky.socialAug 11, 2026, 6:22 PM

Btw, this can happily co-exist with reining in grade inflation for upper-level students, which we should also do. But people need to be able to try out new things (and sometimes fail) before settling on a path without this jeopardizing their chances to get into law/med school or whatever

Michigan is moving to pass/fail for first semester students. This is great and should be expanded to the full first year. Too many students are (rightly) hesitant to try out new and challenging subjects because they are afraid it will mess up their GPA

That'll pass. I remember talking to someone who works for the Nets who is usually a very diplomatic person, and he had absolutely zero good things to say about Harden.

Nice write-up of our recent paper on the link between campaign finance permissiveness and the wealth of politicians.
