Poirot referenced! (1934)

Bull put his pipe in his pocket and tilted his chair. back.
The Superintendent looked at him with a bleak smile.
"What do the little grey cells make of it, Hercule?" he inquired.
Bull was puzzled.
"Never mind," Davey said. "What do you make of it?"
"Not a b—y thing," Bull answered amiably.

(Not about women’s fashions) ““Bull chewed his tawny moustache in annoyance, vexation and wrath.”

My favourite very specific set of recurring pet peeves in early 1930s mysteries: red-fingernails-and-shorts!

never thought of himself as a modern. He strongly disapproved of many things that modern women did—as for instance red lacquered finger nails and tennis shorts instead of proper skirts. So he was not only angry, but a little bewildered to find himself so, and so completely

Not the only one, either! Although "Nurse Pinkerton" is a more explicitly aware nickname

DEATH RUNS RIOT AT OXFORD!
Mr. Pinkerton Finds a Body-'in which you'll meet again the lovable, rabbitty, Welsh and whimsically conceived Mr. Evan Pinkerton, the gifted amateur sleuth..." says Will Cuppy, ace mystery expert of the New York Herald Tribune.
"The Dickens of Detective Story Writers," David Frome, sets fumbling little Mr. Pinkerton down in Oxford with its quiet quadrangles and ancient streets where excitement and death run riot. Again the modest little Welshman blunders on some amazing truths, in his own inimitable and unpredictable way, and comes to the rescue of Scotland Yard with his astonishing deductions.
An excellent yarn of action, suspense, and "muddling through"-in the charming setting of a university town, and spiced with humorous twists galore that will add richly to your enjoyment of helping Mr. Pinkerton crack another exciting mystery.

Cowboys again. This time one of our boys has lost his boots. Standing in a field of long grass the cowboy points towards the ground and shouts back to his colleague, “Lil bone people got muh boots.” This makes no sense to the other cowboy who sits atop his horse away from the action. He responds, “Lil wut?” Sure enough in the foreground we see a squad of little bone people scampering through the grass with the stolen cowboy boots. They’re thrilled. How the bone people got the boots off the cowboy is unclear.

Artist’s note: I tend to draw drawings from the same perspective (straight on) most of the time. This idea came about when I was goofin around trying to draw a character from a lower angle. I like that the story unfolds with the foreground, mid-ground, and background all working together. There’s a draft of this one included in the Spooky Pants book. Coming out next week!
