Latest publication: Hammers & Nails: Military Innovation as a Strategic Dead End
In this article I argue that innovation has become an end-in-itself, supplanting the much harder challenge of defining a meaningful, justifiable and achievable strategy.

Innovation and pioneering new technology and ideas are not the only ways to generate advantage in modern war. Sometimes, the emulation of innovations from elsewhere is just as important.

I think having all the emergency services and working at hospitals and retirement homes should be part of any scheme. It must be broad enough that every 18 year old can participate. The military will take some but not all…
We absolutely need some form of national service, which should be universal (no buy out options) and focussed on connecting 18 year olds to their communities. But governments in English-speaking democracies are terrified of even having this debate.
