What a season for Michael Wacha. 200.2 innings to lead the American League with a 3.32 ERA. And fittingly, he rounds out his year with a Quality Start (6.1 IP / 2 ER), his AL-best 21st.

Still soaking in how special it was last night to celebrate Denny Matthews & his 8,000th game. Thank you, Kansas City. 📸: Jason Hanna

Connecting generations, that’s what Denny Matthews does. Here he is with 20-year-old LHP David Shields, this year’s Paul Splittorff Pitcher of the Year.

Opening Day, 1969. Royals vs. Twins. Listen to Denny Matthews—making his Major League debut at 26 years old—welcome everyone to Municipal Stadium for the first game in Kansas City Royals history. And the picture? Yeah, iconic.

His two 100+ mph pitches (100.1, 100.6) in the 8th inning were his first triple-digit pitches since Oct. 5, 2024 in Game 1 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium.

@jakeeisenberg.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 1:58 AM

Lucas Erceg averaged 100.3 mph on his sinker & 99.0 mph on his four-seam fastball in his perfect 8th inning to protect a one-run lead. His 100.6 mph sinker to induce a groundout from Randal Grichuk was tied for the fastest pitch of his career.

That’s a lot! And still less than 20% of the number of Royals games Denny has done 🤯

@jakeeisenberg.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 5:23 PM

Including the two games in 2022 when I filled in, I’m at 625 Royals games. If you include the postseason, 631. So, ~7.8% of Denny’s total.

@jakeeisenberg.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 12:52 AM

Just a staggering number. And what an honor to ride shotgun for even a fraction of them. So excited to celebrate No. 8,000 on Friday with many more to come!
