I'm teaching two-term precalculus (we're not allowed to call it "college algebra"! b/c parents get the Big Boo-Hoos when we tell them their kids can't do math), so it's going to be a mental and very emotional slog for me until sometime next Spring. 😞

We can blame (compulsory) pandemic lockdowns less and less and (optional but socially encouraged) AI dependence more and more, but more people need to know the level of student preparation we're seeing in college nowadays—it's incredibly depressing. (Many can't read or write, either, I'm told!)

This year that I'm just going to outright tell precalc students who can't work with fractions or use the order of operations that they need to drop and come back after remedial coursework at a community college. I cannot be re-teaching 4th-6th grade math to 13th graders (along with all of HS math).

Learned recently that there is tocino-flavored spam, and now I need to make a special trip to Pacific Supermarket in SSF to get some 🐷
