I think Leigh Stein's piece on the current nonfiction market is super smart and right on the money. leighstein.substack.com/p/losers-v-v...
Yes, I don't want to judge too harshly, because I think nervous laughter is more or less involuntary, especially in a crowd setting, but it sucks to lose the tension that's so carefully created in a good movie!
I think it was intentionally jarring in a way they were not prepared to take in and thus interpreted as ridiculous
I saw a screening of The Night of the Hunter, and when they showed the murder victim in the car submerged in the river, everyone laughed!
Then they came for the Democratic members of Congress, and I said nothing, even though I was a Democratic member of Congress, because I was one of the special ones who reached across the aisle and compromised, so they wouldn't do anything to ME, right? Right??
Friendly reminder that @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social thinks we should "turn the page" on these guys even though they're literally doing "show me your papers" shit after raiding the house of someone he works with. Every day. Who has the same job as him.
Guys, we are well past the point where we need to preface tweets about Ilhan Omar with "If she really did something, show us the evidence." We all know she did not do something and there is no evidence.
Homeland Security raiding Ilhan Omar’s home the day after the profile on threats to politicians that didn’t squarely name Trump is …really something.

I signed up to write postcards reminding people in swing states to vote, and the addresses they sent me are in Texas. As a former Texas resident, I'm shocked that it's genuinely a swing state right now.
That's why Jair was always in the hospital.
The culture I left behind 😭 (but I still have mourning doves)
You have a killer topic (no pun intended) and you deliver on it extremely well!
Right, I think those are among the biggest factors driving the nonfiction bust, rather than things publishers are doing. (Obvi the whole picture is complex.)
The types of nonfiction I edit aren't really driven by bookstores, but the things that are supposed to sell them (big author platform, big media hits, etc) are not working they way they used to.
I personally don't think it's "in crisis" (just trending down right now and will eventually trend back up), but it's definitely affecting aaallll kinds of nonfiction.
Twas not flip! Thank you for the birthday wishes!
