"Nobody I know is a fan of Avatar!"
Shameless plug but...I try to provide an alternative.
Hey there. 🙂
It really feels like it could be the start of something new. We are in a summer where a Steven Spielberg alien movie with a car chase could be the biggest disappointment.
Two years ago, "Civil War" opened to $25.5 million and set a box office record for A24. "Backrooms" is going to blow that away and take the No. 1 spot from "Mandalorian and Grogu" in the process.
The future is now. My latest for @thewrap.com. #FilmSky #BoxOffice
Paramount's "Passenger" opened in sixth place at the box office this weekend with $10.5 million. The last time there were six films that grossed $10M+ on Memorial Day weekend was 2013, with "The Great Gatsby" in the No. 6 spot.
This summer is performing like a pre-pandemic summer. #FilmSky
Time to eat crow: I forecast a box office slowdown in the second half of May. I was wrong. This Memorial Day weekend matched the overall total of 2022, and it did it thanks to not one, not two, but SIX films.
My latest box office analysis for @thewrap.com #FilmSky
I don't have faith in Disney. But I do have faith in this man.
If Episode I was as well received initially as TFA, it hits $1B in its initial run and that hype spills over to Episode II even against Spider-Man.
Still that shows that quality still impacts the staying power of a franchise and whether it transcends generations. Bond hasn't been a record setter like Star Wars but has never gone too long without a classic. It can take just one film to refuel the tank.
You're really underestimating how massive the Episode I hype was. It was just as big as TFA. Falling behind Spidey and LOTR was in good part a quality issue.
Sony made a point of telling everyone that Jacksepticeye is working on Bloodborne. I wouldn't be surprised if Blumhouse and New Line, the two big studio entities most aligned to reach out to online creators, are reaching out as we speak.
"The Mandalorian and Grogu" could make less at the box office than "The Devil Wears Prada 2." Imagine telling someone that a decade ago.
My writeup for @thewrap.com about how far "Star Wars" has fallen from its status as the godfather of blockbusters. #FilmSky
It's been a while since I did a fun interview for TheWrap, so here's one with the CEO of @dropout.tv and host of "Game Changer," @samreich.bsky.social.
We talked about how the show gets bigger every year and how his father, Robert, guided his approach to being a boss.
What did you use to study for literature categories? That is my deepest blind spot that Jeopardy regularly goes to, especially in Final.
Last year they moved the westside shuttle to the Expo Line. Makes it so much easier to go to the Bowl from work.
AMPTP talks with SAG-AFTRA for two more weeks, then DGA, then back to SAG if a deal still isn't reached.
Will be interesting to see if WGA's agreement to a four-year contract cycle allows the studios to push for the same with SAG and DGA through pattern bargaining
Couldn't possibly be because the Avatar films (the first two anyway) have more thought and care put into their narrative and the function every character and action serves to the plot than a single second of the Mario movies. No it's an AGENDA! (nvm that those critics liked the Sonic films🙄)
I can't understate how unusual it is for the WGA to reach a deal after just three weeks of talks. For the past several contract cycles, their talks with the AMPTP have been labor chess matches at best and bitter exchanges at worst.
That's the best hook I've seen since The New Republic wrote this subhed: "When a group of libertarians set about scrapping their local government, chaos descended. And then the bears moved in."
