What to do with unused grid capacity at EV charging points now that the US is lagging behind in the EV transition? Use it for small data centres? The article explains why the prospects for this are slim. It will remain at the AI-generated image stage.

@mrchrisadams.netOct 10, 2026, 6:49 AM

TBH, I think with some older GPU cards that weren’t so horrifyingly expensive and such a target for thieves, it might still make sense commercially, as even depreciated 3-4 year cards could still generate more revenue than the EV charging kWh sold in a given month, if there is enough demand.

@mrchrisadams.netOct 10, 2026, 6:49 AM

That AI in EV chargers thing seemed so bizarre. The (projected) AI revenue would be so much larger than the EV revenue that it barely makes sense to offer the EV charging once it’s set up. It’s like the EV charging ends up being a token “social license to operate with local benefits” thing.

Electricity free for everyone? As in something like a rising block tariff where a chunk is free, similar that we see elsewhere? I realise you might have written this up before - is there link you’d share if so?

you don’t hold "AI" accountable; you hold AI developers, vendors, and corporations that profit off it accountable holding "AI accountable" is like holding a toaster accountable. it's an inanimate object. it doesn't have wishes, feelings, or desires

Starbucks’ rollback of its climate commitments is just the latest example of why voluntary climate standards like net zero are only useful when coupled w/ credible threats of regulation or (gasp!) *actual* rules on climate action. Mini 🧵

Thank you for the thread! Have you come across any examples of organisations implementing frequent flier levies internally to tax carbon from aviation or similar before for recirculating into green measures in the org? It’s mentioned in your paper and sounds fairly doable.

i remain so alarmed by all the discourse about how people can use AI to get good deals / fight wage theft / counteract extractive insurance practices that doesn’t acknowledge that — if you accept this works — the companies on the other side … also can use it to do the opposite?

Captain America has advice for you: 'One book he found eye-opening was Rebecca Solnit’s “The Mother of All Questions.” “The hardest thing to reconcile is that just because you have good intentions, doesn’t mean it’s your time to have a voice,” he said.'

Right, they're saying, "I made an intelligent being and then told it to make 10,000 copies of itself to try a problem and to delete itself if it failed and then iterate its mass-self-suicide until it solved the problem" and, uh, buddy, I don't think you made a being but if you did, ho boy...

@mrchrisadams.netOct 3, 2026, 11:43 AM

For me at least, it feels like there is definitely an LLM at play, if only in the diagrams, but at the same time, I found the analysis good enough to look past. Worth a read, if you ever think about the drastic things people will do as the climate heats up.

@mrchrisadams.netOct 3, 2026, 11:43 AM

I really appreciate how the author compares the costs to that of nuclear, in terms of needing to account for the often-left-out costs of insurance against things going south, like with termination shock (i.e. the heat rebound when SRM stops)

@mrchrisadams.netOct 3, 2026, 11:43 AM

I’m no fan of substack, but this piece here in the actual likely costs of solar radiation management, when you factor in planning for termination shock is one of the most readable yet stark pieces I’ve come across.
