My support for bluesky/atproto is pretty much explicitly a "political" project. It is bad for a small number of (mostly right-wing) people to literally own all the sources of media. Open-source algorithms + the ability to move your account without negative network effects opposes this.
My lukewarm take is that when people disagree about whether LLMs can do X (be it reasoning, creativity, etc), the substantive disagreement is really about what X means, rather than about LLMs themselves. Aka Wittgenstein was right

LOVE this question: "...why should...“non-credit-producing activities” [like lucid motivating explanations or mathematical education] follow a [highly prestigious award for mathematical contribution like the] Fields Medal, and not contribute to it?"

This bit made me jump up and cheer, a phrasing of a powerful idea worth holding onto tightly:
**We must avoid scientific trust becoming a subscription product**
I'd vote for the future where there's the option of a box that pops up when lazy nonsense appears and says "this looks like AI slop. Would you like me to find a piece written by a thoughtful human on this topic - something that's valued by other humans and is actually worth reading?"
"In Referees We Trust" will be open access and available October 13 -- but for those who prefer physical books, Barnes and Noble is running its preorder deal again! Members can get 25% off all preorders with code PREORDER25 through September 11.
Rakow’s new paper found that “around 90% of articles that discuss replication and over 80% of articles with author-identified replications are missed by searching databases for replicat* because databases hold few details per article”. 8/
I wonder if this (i.e., scholar-created and maintained, openly governed, computational open science infrastructure) will open pathways to more nimble evolution of the fitness landscape, which could itself be a defense against ossified gaming of the system (as in h-index, journal prestige, etc.)
Like @devezer.bsky.social says, science is a social process. Which is both beautiful and also… not so beautiful.
Yikes!
Added some discussion to a @semble.so collection as an additional discussion bundle for the paper: semble.so/profile/joel...
One of my favorite features on the Lea app: collating discussions of papers! Beautiful companion to @semble.so for social sensemaking of science.

@semble.so collections of collections???
Alas, no! I recall our conversation fondly. I'd love to reconnect though! Will follow up in DM.
