It is becoming increasingly apparent that societies must create conditions to stop being merely spectators (and exploitation objects) of digitalisation. Instead of allowing it to further concentrate wealth, influence, and surveillance, open corporate silos and simultaneously build public capacity.

"But this is a perverted idea of progress. What good is a proof of the Riemann conjecture if there is no one who understands it? And not just a single person: you need a whole community of people to understand it and then gradually think about what it might lead to.

Oh nice, my neighbors did a Halloween @semble.so theme ;)

Halloween yard display with three stacked carved pumpkins and decorative skeletons in front of a wooden lattice fence, surrounded by autumn foliage.

I really like this video and have been meaning to reach out to David! Are you both connected?

Strong agree - denormalize digital servitude. I had some related thoughts here

we don’t need to explain atproto. we need to move the Overton Window to get people asking why it’s considered normal that a company can unilaterally control (and destroy) part of our identity and we just… let them

It's really fun watching someone go on a sensemaking tear on @semble.so - collecting, connecting and synthesizing perspectives on a complex issue. Looking forward to a future where sensemakers livestream on @stream.place

"Owen Yingling, a senior studying philosophy at the University of Chicago, told me that he and his peers fear that A.I. will prevent them from growing into full-fledged human beings"

This piece is actually really encouraging imo

That A.I. raises such fundamental questions—that it threatens our moral agency and faculties of self-definition—may go some ways toward explaining why young people, on the whole, are more skeptical of the technology than their elders: not only because they occupy a more vulnerable position in the job market but because they have not yet had the opportunity to become who they are, to paraphrase Nietzsche. Owen Yingling, a senior studying philosophy at the University of Chicago, told me that he and his peers fear that A.I. will prevent them from growing into full-fledged human beings. “I see people’s parents, my parents . . . they love all the things they can do with A.I., because these are people who are fifty, sixty years old, who have already lived lives, have already become the person that they are,” he said. “But for us, because we haven’t done anything or become anyone, it’s a sort of existential threat.”

The hit rate for finding interesting articles and academic papers on @semble.so is, I gotta say, remarkably high. In the ballpark of "Related Articles" on Google Scholar. You just pop in the url or doi to 'create a card' then scroll through the Similar Cards.

we have a policy for the use of genAI at the @aial.ie. we reflect on values key to scientific integrity, such as replicability, and err on the side of not using it

A flowchart that guides reflective thinking around generative AI in the context of research. It highlights key, interconnected values underpinning scientific integrity, alongside practical and wider socio-political considerations when deciding whether to use generative AI for research.

Either way, I see no reason to assume that this 90% is a fixed percentage - mass opinion can shift very quickly, e.g., imagine if popular influencers started talking about the importance of digital sovereignty or whatever other sexier frame.

@ronentk.meOct 8, 2026, 6:44 PM

Not to draw too tight of an analogy here, but I can't help but think of attitudes towards slavery prior to the Civil War- significant numbers in the North were proslavery/apathetic, only a fraction were abolitionists. Wouldn't be surprised if the same was true re "digital serfdom" and abolitionism

Gently, this misses the point IMO - algorithmic choice does not mean everybody builds their own algorithms, it means an open market of competition for a (likely very small) number of people to design the right set of choices for people to choose from.

CColin@colin-fraser.netOct 8, 2026, 3:09 PM

I don’t think 90% of people want to control the algorithm

"Collective intelligence refers to systems in which people, computational tools, organizations, and institutions coordinate their complementary strengths to produce outcomes that no participant could achieve independently" hmmm maybe CI could help with this:

Shout it from the rooftops! Demanding another person’s attention for work you didn’t do or think about is antisocial behavior. We need a new social contract in which this kind of gamesmanship is understood to be a cancer on whatever work culture it attempts to consume.
