I guess my takeaway from the maths OpenAI saga, by also taking into consideration how mathematicians respond to the situation (as everyone should), is: If it cannot reason, and therefore the humans still need to do all the verification/correction/deciphering, then tell it to shut the fuck up.

“In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com

DINOv2 has never seen a caption, and Qwen3 has never seen an image. We still aligned their embedding spaces without a single image-caption pair. It even works when the images and the captions come from different datasets. Project page: dominik-schnaus.github.io/unpaired-rosetta ⬇️

This is a result I’ve dreamt about for many years: *unpaired translation between images and text* I thought it might be only slightly possible, the kind of thing you have to really squint at. But Dominik proved this wrong. You don’t have to squint. Worth looking for yourself:

“We’re now expected to either (1) check all this garbage that OAI is producing or (2) concede that all of these conjectures have been proven,” one algebraic topologist wrote to me. “I believe in politics this is known as ‘flooding the zone.’ We simply don’t have the resources to correct the record.”

Dude what happened to Bezos. Some time ago he was trying with the "Alpha Male" look and now he looks like he just got out of prison where he spent the last 20 years.

I am keeping my academic job season cover letter fairly brief this season: “Wrote dissertation before arrival of LLMs. Can also tell jokes.”

I'm not sure if y'all saw a CNN report on how the US had almost started WW3 with China based on fabricated information generated by a chatbot, claiming that a Chinese vessel was carrying components of nuclear weapons.

That was an "existential threat" to humanity
