I think you have your piece turned the wrong way round for this photo, perhaps? In this photo, your purl stitches (- - -) are at the bottom, and your knit stitches (v v v) are at the top. But if you flip the piece over and look at the other side, the purl will be at top (what you most recently did).

Golly, that’s difficult to properly line up which bit of which word goes with which note! I guess people of the time would have had more practice with that. I am very grateful for modern type that can fit properly with notation, for sure.
