every single one of these linked processes stems from thinking of education in general, & higher ed in particular, as a resource frontier: a virgin territory or untapped resource of as-yet uncaptured potential wealth that now must be harvested / optimized / extracted. this mindset is our true target

It’s also a helpful invention for dealing with kids who wouldn’t otherwise be willing to part with their (gross!) teeth that have fallen out!

Worth noting too that I first encountered Paglen’s work in this jaw-dropping essay from @nathankhensley.bsky.social that I still think about all the time and recommend to people regularly: www.e-flux.com/journal/72/6...

An illuminating and generous critical review essay. It remains a year of extraordinary richness in academic books… Fun memory, WJT Mitchell was, my freshman year in college, the first visiting speaker I went to see give a talk (or three, a lecture series on What Images Want).

Lovely! And Pope’s very next couplet enacts this unpredictable use of common rhyming words to humorous effect: If "crystal streams with pleasing murmurs creep", The reader's threaten'd (not in vain) with "sleep".

Thanks for checking Heather!! I really do like Oxford’s online situation, too (chapter abstracts, inline images, links, PDFs)…

If you're curious how the American literary scene—and prizes like the National Book Award in particular—came to be so diverse...

❌ DON'T read this predictable rant about "Woke Pulitzers" or whatever!

✅ DO check out my book WRITING BACKWARDS, available here: cup.columbia.edu/book/writing...

A fantastically sharp post that joins a sense of text's actual functioning (resonant with the Textpocalypse described by @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social) to a longer history of the class function of literacy that resonates with @mattseybold.bsky.social on deliteracy.

LLMs bridge the gap between the honor still accorded to white-collar literacy and the dwindling capacity of educational institutions to reproduce it.

I said to myself huh, haven’t looked at emacs in a long time, fired up search, and now gotta hand it to someone:

Searches “emacs” gets “Did you mean: vim”

Really enjoyed this, Brian! (I was primed for it by my colleague Lee’s tales of CEU on his return last year.)

It turns out "infiltrating" the Danube Institute mostly requires filling out an online registration form.

That, and eating a lot of dry pastries.

The essay is finally out in @thedriftmag.com
