It is, today, 115 years since navy surgeon and Antarctic explorer George Murray Levick saw his first Adélie penguin, after which he wrote several pages of notes about their sexual habits, concluded “there seems to be no crime too low for these penguins”, and saw his findings suppressed for 97 years

Still, the first of his penguin photos in the book is enormously entertaining, because it suggests they found Levick—a fellow male, after all—a threat, and had they had the power of flight, perhaps they might have had a go at him the way other sea birds do. (Puffins, for example: little bastards)

Rather than cover the cost of gender affirming care for trans youth under medicaid, Colorado is voluntarily enacting the republican "taper and detransition" policy for youth on medicaid and dropping coverage. WTF.

Ironically, the first known violation of that law is now coming from the state itself. On September 18th, the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) informed providers that “certain Physician-Administered Drug (PAD) services for the purposes of gender-affirming care will no longer be covered benefits for members under 18 years of age.” Two weeks later, HCPF released its full policy surrounding its updated coverage, and it somehow manages to be worse than the policies enacted by Arizona and Virginia. As Transitics reported last week, the federal rule allows for a 6-month ‘tapering’ period for youth currently receiving gender-affirming care where federal funds can still be used. And although HCPF does mention that stipulation in its policy, it also introduced a strange exception:

“Effective October 13, 2026, claims payment for GnRH/LHRH agents prescribed for gender-affirming care therapy for members under the age of 18 will not be allowed… Prior authorization for testosterone, estrogen, progesterone or medroxyprogesterone therapy for members under the age of 18,” the policy reads, “who are receiving and stabilized on therapy for gender-affirming care prior to October 13, 2026, may receive approval to allow for tapering and discontinuation of therapy.”

The exclusion of puberty blockers in the tapering policy isn’t accidental. The state’s prior authorization guidance that was updated the same day mirrors the policy and once again does not allow for a tapering period for trans kids receiving puberty blockers. And like Arizona and Virginia, Colorado has provided no indication that it has notified patients and their families. In doing so, Colorado is going far beyond what even the Trump administration intended—immediately cutting many trans kids’ care and leaving them scrambling for options.

Colorado & Michigan have become the latest blue states to end Medicaid coverage for trans youth. Solidly blue Colorado will also be IMMEDIATELY shutting off care for all trans kids receiving puberty blockers—despite Trump's rule allowing a 6 month ‘tapering’ period. This is a complete betrayal.

Hey, smart people: is there an effective way to protect a fat ebook comic from AI scraping once it’s unleashed into the world? Or is that barn door dwindling south of the horse’s tail since it’s been all up on patreon this whole time?

my other Gupdate is that my Ginga Rubra female is all bricked up and ready to pop, so i spent a little time today rigging up a birthing box for her. Her tank also has a wild type ginga rubra male i will eventually cull for the 30, so that should be interesting once my two populations cross.

With the uptick in ICE activity & the resulting surge in whistle requests (get 100-3k free at 3dwhistles.com), I'm reminding folks that you can support the printing of whistles by giving $20 to @protopasta.bsky.social, who in turn sends DEEPLY DISCOUNTED filament to our printers!

We obvs don't have a whistle culture here in Maryland, but lots of other metro regions in the US do, and the whistle crew folks do good work that's worth supporting

To be clear, the "criminal investigation" is Trump's lackeys pretending that Omar's late father filled out their family's paperwork incorrectly when Omar herself was a child; based on that, Trump is trying to get her citizenship removed and force her deportation. That's the "criminal investigation."
