A brilliant example of the craft of investigative journalism, from the evidence gathered to the descriptions of the people & places. And then there's the story itself, which is horrifying, but ultimately inspiring. God bless this young woman for persisting. www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...

Here's a happier one. Meet the Maskies, Pixie and Nacho. Ferrets are quite intelligent and perceptive, often considered on par with some breeds of cats and dogs, so the Maskies have been showing their support and affection for us more than usual this week.

On This Day in History: October 9, 1959: Yayoi Kusama opened her first solo New York exhibition at Brata Gallery, showing five large white Infinity Net paintings - similar to the red one featured here. In spite of that, it would be thirty more years before she was fully embraced by the art world.

The first ferret we ever rescued, Monster, passed this morning from complications with leukemia and heart disease. He grew up in the basement of our former home where I spent most of my days back then. He was my closest non-Elizabeth friend and I miss him already.

What happens when every sales number, event, review, and setback starts to feel like evidence of whether you deserve to keep making art?

This week’s Life on the Midlist is about that weight, and why I’m feeling wrung out atm. mailchi.mp/3eb2f3f60256...

Sometimes. That's actually why I've been so torn about the subject on my next manuscript. I currently have a list of five ideas - the best two of which came in one of those kind of overproductive brainstorms.

On This Day in History: October 4, 1974 Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Anne Sexton died at 45. Her confessional writing has been an inspiration of mine ever since learning of her in the late 90s. It's fair to say, while we are very different, there would be no me if there had been no Anne Sexton.

I’ve traveled 689 miles on book tour so far and learned something mildly irritating: The elaborate presentations I spent ages building are not the best events. Sitting down with another interesting person and talking is.

First leg down. Three to go:
