HOW TO GET RICH IN AMERICA In today's piece, I wrote about what happens when owning things is rewarded over doing things, the generational divides it creates, the casino economy that emerges from it, specifically the yolofolio, and how it's changing the way we think about work.

THE CRISIS BEHIND THE HOUSING CRISIS

In today's NYT piece, I wrote about how the housing fight is both about housing *and* retirement. We made the house do two jobs at once, and it's pitting the old against the young.

Why is the stock market shrugging off... everything? Well, maybe it's betting that AI will save it and that the government won't let AI fail. Call it the AI put. My new piece in NYT Opinion on the market's reliance on getting rescued:

We've built an entire economy around selling people the feeling of control through bets, hacks, subscriptions, and optimization. But the model only works if people stay desperate. New essay on control and agency, financial nihilism, belief markets, the manosphere, and spectacle during war.

Betting on Jesus returning by 2027 and the Backstreet Boys singing about crypto are kind of the same thing. Speculation and nostalgia are both exit strategies from the present, and neither provides answers. New piece on what happens when the economy grows without… people.

nytimes.comOpinion | The Dangerous Power of Prediction Markets
3
@kyla.bsky.socialJan 23, 2026, 8:26 PM

HOW BETTING BECAME POLITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE In today's New York Times piece, I wrote about how prediction markets validate political events before Congress can respond, and how those market outcomes can end up deciding what's legitimate.

The Dangerous Power
of Prediction MarketsPrediction markets have exploded into mainstream American life.
Platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi now allow users to bet on
virtually any outcome of future event if President Trump will
take over Greenland, who will win the Golden Globe for best
podcast or even the second coming of Jesus Christ (users think
there’s a3 percent chance he returns before 2027). The platforms
also include Robinhood, Coinbase, FanDuel and
DraftKings are growing, and gaining billions of dollars in value,
at tremendous speed.
Major media outlets like Dow Jones (including The Walll Street
Journal), CNN and CNBC have announced partnerships,
integrating prediction market odds into coverage. The news is now
read alongside people betting on the news.
‘The uncomfortable truth is that prediction machines have become
infrastructure for the legitimacy of event outcomes, no matter how
outlandish: When markets process political events before
democratic institutions like Congress can deliberate, market
outcomes are treated as validation and permission for political
actions. If traders have already bet and been paid, the action must
be legitimate.
‘Speed matters because narrative say, that U.S. invasion of
noncombatant country is perfectly reasonable sets in before
counternarrative (that this invasion is illegal and should be
stopped) can form. This represents shift in how political
uncertainty is processed and who decides what events mean.
Legitimacy increasingly flows to whoever processes uncertainty
first. Markets have optimized for speed. Democracy has been
designed for deliberation.

NEW INTERVIEW I sat down with San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly and Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin to talk about what really matters in 2026. Are we headed for the 1970s or the 1990s? Why does the economy keep not breaking? And why should we count cranes?
